Can you guys go ahead and list these by preference again? I want it all in one place

1. Combat
2. Exploration
3. Social Intrigue

There will most certainly be parts of all three, but I'll lean heavily on what people want to do.

P.S. We can start at level 3 or level 4, I'll hold it to a vote.

P.P.S. please please please talk to me during the character creation process. Your characters' backstories will be very important to the campaign and how you want them to evolve will weigh heavily on how I structure loot, plot points, events, etc.

Exploration is my top choice. No strong preference between social intrigue and combat as a runner up.

Per LINE, I would enjoy starting at level 4 and coming up with a shared background as to why people know our name. My current idea is that we are known for killing a BBEG who threatened a large swathe of land. As it turns out, they were whooping our asses and about to kill us when, by their own hand, they [INSERT IRONICALLY SELF DESTRUCTIVE THING HERE] and killed him/herself.

Now the group has mad imposter syndrome and are trying to actually earn the fame that has come with the name.

I'm going to play a front-line, direct combatant in the form of a Warforged or a Dwarf Berserker. Need to do a bit more research first, but that's where my heart is at.

combat wins out by a little, but both exploration and social are a close second.

I am going to need someone to ELI5 how to use DND Beyond because that looks fucking awesome.

Basically Nik sends you a link and you "join his campaign" where he can turn on data sharing and grant you access to all his books/class options. DnD Beyond is awesome because it tracks all your shit for you, spell slots, hit points, hit dice, etc. You can click "short rest" or "long rest" and it does all the math for you. Makes having a character very very easy. I can even add in custom content for you guys to use, including the options from Exploring Eberron

After building my character, I am now tied between exploration and combat. They are an equal split. KILL.

Murc, have you considered an accelerated XP award/leveling system? I only ask because I don't believe I have ever leveled up in a PbP DnD game on this site.

Yeah buddy. We’ll be moving fast. I’m hoping for big story points and fast transitions. I don’t want us to get hung up on random shit, which is why I’m not requiring people to post daily, though a “I don’t have anything to say here” post in the OOC would be nice. I’ll update every day or so, and whenever we hit a milestone I’ll level us up. Should only be a handful of combats between levels, I’m aiming for a 2-3 months between leveling, if we keep up our posting

Whoooo milestone. Earning those big XP numbers can be fun and its a good way to see progression, but Milestone can be a lot easier on everybody.

Hey everyone, I want to try out the speed factor rules for initiative. They're kind of complex, but I think they'll make combat a lot more interesting. I'll make a post for table rules in a second, but know that you're going to need to roll one d20 for initiative every round, when you call out your action, and I'll apply modifiers for it based off your actions. Then, everyone will go in order.

Just read through this link on Brewing in 5e. What do you say, boss? Sound good? Toss it into the house rules for brewing?

Beautiful. I like the idea of multiple successful rolls resulting in brews that grant things like temporary hit points or certain effects, whereas failed rolls are just good beer for RP purposes.

Can we work that in? Kho'nan is something of an aficionado. Finding new recipes would be side quest material that he would bite at. On that same vein, I will accept any mild effects you think a Shieldcrusher Stout upon two successful rolls would grant. That is the recipe he knows by heart.

Request to toss out some Brewing rolls to represent what Kho'nan could have accomplished in the time before the last mission, and to see what he currently has on hand.

Request granted, 30 days, and you're paying materials out of pocket. Anyone is able to chip in for supplies, but only for as long as you've been traveling with beast.

Dope. So I will kick this off. Depending on what this costs, for the first batch I rolled a 3 and a 21 (natural 20) using Wisdom as the modifier.

Brewing Rolls: 2#1d20+1 3 21

Doesn't matter what the DC of Shieldcrusher Stout is because I failed the first roll. According to those rules I posted earlier, this just means Kho'nan brewed a tasty stout, but not a magically beneficial one.

Therefore, I have officially committed to at least two brew attempts.

The second roll is a natural 20. Whatever the DC, I knocked this fucker (the actual brewing portion) out of the park. I will wait to have an official DC/cost before rolling the second, fermentation, roll to confirm if this brew is magically delicious.

Which brew are you making? Are you using the chart given in the DM binder rules?

I have never seen that chart. I was operating under the assumption that he was making Shieldcrusher Stout (because I assumed that was all he knew). I don't have a 5e rulebook. I have the Ebberon campaign info, but that's it.

Also, after doing some more reading post my comments last night about Barbarian Path, this article has put me off the Path of the Beast. I will think about things while doing work around the house today and let you know what I finally decide.

OK, I went with Dwarven Courage, DC 13; rolled 12. JUST MISSED IT. So, that is 10 gp down, right? At least we have a good ass pint of Shieldcrusher Stout to trade.

After talking with you about making Path of the Beast long-term viable, I have decided to stick with that. I plan on really sticking with it too and just seeing how it plays out. If I end up constantly getting my ass kicked, then I can try another path with another character perhaps haha. But yeah, THE BEAST is going Path of THE BEAST.


Suggestion for Moving Forward

I think we should head to Galinndan's camp after a couple days of rest with plans to find silver along the way if we have solid intelligence of a location to do so. The Beast sees acquiring silver as a priority given the group's previous SNAFU with the Werewolf.

After that little side quest, we rendezvous at the camp and see what the Elf has created.

Veil will follow the Beast.

General XP-related question:

Aside from the standard XP-earning format, will you allow characters to set goals (short/mid/long term) to earn additional XP? Goal-oriented character growth happens to be my shit.

Right now thinking that establishing a profitable mine for the team could be a realistic long-term goal for Kho'nan. Short/mid will most likely be combat related until we progress further into the game.

I would award the characters for setting and achieving goals, yes. XP is a tough one to quantify, but I may allow them to level earlier than the rest of the party, since I'm definitely not doing xp for this adventure

The first RPG I ever played had players leveling at different (albeit not too drastically) times because they just got up to different epic shit sometimes. I can dig it. Will start tossing some in now.

Yall are welcome to do the same. In fact, I should've asked for your goals with my other character questions.

I was trying to figure out the margin by which that Intimidation roll missed a medium DC and realised that I did not know what it was 5e.  Found this article that lists the various DCs, gives a critique of their range, offers an alternative, AND has an insightful comment section.

In other news, DnD Beyond allows a stat over ride for just this thing. My final modifier is +5. So I rolled a 12 rather than a 9.

So still, just missed Hagen's weak ass threshold. Regardless, at least now I have a new NPC to hate irrationally. Time to break his bitch ass husband out of bitch ass jail?


EDIT: With Guidance from Helden, Kho'nan's final roll total is 14. If you appreciate the thesis of the article Another AKA put forward, that's well within the boundaries of a medium-difficulty task. :-D

On Hagen: I am down to roleplay things out, of course, but for the sake of getting the gears moving in the game overall, I am perfectly OK with assuming he gives us all the relevant details. If he was a new NPC with whom we had not yet interacted, I'd be much more inclined to roleplay. And, in all honestly, I am really chomping at the bit to get to this mine.

On Gold: Unless there is really a definitive reason to do otherwise, I am going to be of the mind of an even split - especially in this case. We have done nothing except accept a job: everyone should get an even cut of 50 GP.

Nathan, as for the Brewing Supplies am I going to need to purchase ingredients and then pay again for the actual brewing process, as I did before? OR is getting the ingredients more of an RP situation and the payment comes into play once I attempt brewing?

Paying twice doesn't quite make sense to me if it is the former.

Even just an OOC saying you're grabbing what you need is enough for me. I've already been assuming you've got a brewing kit, since you've been brewing in your backstory.

The assumption that you're buying the general yeasts, barleys, etc. that you'd need is enough for me to let you convert gold into brews while on the road. Mechanically, just let me know the cost of any brew you're making and mark it off your sheet.

Can we get a light summary of the relevant information re:Hagen's husband and the mine? Is the prison far from/out of the way of Galinndan's camp? Is the mine?

Yeah, over half have asked for OOC deets, so here they are:
Hagen and Killian had claim to a lot of lodes in the Silverwood, which brought the two families much fortune. When Thrane took control of the lower half of the woods, they claimed the most profitable lodes and gave them to Thranish prospectors. When they found Hagen and Killian at other lodes in their half of the Silverwood, Thrane told them to pack it or get locked up. Hagen has lots of knowledge of the Silverwood and has claim to profitable lodes a short walk away from the camp.

As for Killian, Hagen will say he's just under six foot, with short brown hair. He doesn't have any other identifying features, but he has no reason to not go with you if you come for him. Hagen is positive he's in the prison in Thaliost, located in the guards district, though he's never been in person. He doesn't think it will be easy to get Killian out, and makes it clear he'd be getting him out one way or another when they finally reclaim the town.

OK beautiful. PC sheet has updated gold total and the Shieldcrusher Stout.

I'll RP the actual gathering of supplies and am good to go after that. Eager to get the show on the road, figuratively and literally.

EDIT: As for Killian, I would like to keep *going loud* as our final option, purely from an OOC perspective. Beast will no doubt want to just get in, rip the doors off, and get out. But as a group, if Veil could do his sneaky sneak thing OR if Izar could drug/magic/charisma some guards, we might be able to get Killian out without drawing a lot of attention to ourselves.
