Job 1: Into the Black (IC)

Changying considers your counter offer for a moment. "Alright, yeah sure, how about this instead though. If the intel you find is something good, we can forgot about the credits you owe me. But I need you to cut some friends of mine into the job. I owe them both favors, told them I'd find them some real work. They're reliable, and by the looks of it you could use the extra manpower. Pretty sure they're hanging out in the bar, I'll buzz them back."

She nods to the quiet, stocky gentleman sitting at the table, who makes a call on his compad. "Hey, tell Gomez and Zhen to get back here. Changying has a job for them."

A few moments later, two individuals enter the room. "Okay, good. Alright I'll let you all work out the details with each other, I've got a personal call to make. Just find me something juicy I can sell."

OOC:

A stern-faced, straight-backed man enters the room dressed in plainclothes and a crisp jacket. His sharp eyes dart around the room, bouncing from person to corner to person. He checks his holstered pistol and a knife sheath beside it, seemingly unaware of the motion.

Locking eyes with Roz, he gives a curt greeting. "I am Zhen. I suppose you are the one that has work for us. Excuse my presumption, but I am not proficient in technical matters. If you need someone to watch your back, I am your man, though I can also perform manual labor."

With that, Zhen steps to the side, glancing at the other man who entered with him and looking expectantly at the others.

A man in a long coat that goes down to his knees that is opened on the front steps into the room. His hair is unkempt and he has the makings of a beard plastered on his face. He appears to be absent, toying with what seems to be the rip-cord heater pack off the bottom of an instant noodle cup and a disassembled pocket watch. He notices the attention of someone in the room being drawn to him and looks up.

"Oh, yeah, I haven't introduced myself, name's Ian"

As soon as his introduction is finished he leans against a wall and begins to carefully tinker with the contraption he's made.

The man who follows Zheng into the room does so while draining the rest of a CornaCola Jolt can ("Now with twice the caffeine!"). "Oh hey we've got guests. Name's Gomez." He wipes his lips with the back of his left hand and realizes he has nowhere to set the empty can of soda so he waves it in a casual greeting.

He is fairly nondescript, and it would be hard to pick him out of a crowd, or remember his name if he helped you find a product in a big-box retailer. His skin is light brown, his black hair short and kind of messy, like he didn't do anything with it besides get out of bed. Didn't shave this morning either. He's dressed in Genoan business (very) casual: a salmon colored dress shirt (which isn't tucked in), khaki slacks and white trainers. Over this he wears a rain grey hoodie with a small design embroidered over the left breast, but it's hard to make out.

"So what's up boss? You got work for us?"

Roz grinned back at Changying.
"Cut and polish. I'll take those terms. As you say we are probably a bit paltry, so some extra bodies will definitely be appreciated."

She cast a brief look over at Henrietta, Ziggy and Ian. As the youngest, she hadn't expected to become the spokesperson quite so quickly. It wasn't something that particularly worried her though, she'd always been a chatterbox and if someone else had been taking the lead, she'd probably have been leaning over their shoulder anyway. Safe to assume anyway that they'd all agreed with the deals so far, or else they'd have spoke up right? Definitely.

As the two newcomers entered, she stared at both with interest. She was still sitting down, but had turned in the seat to face the door. Her pale face was marked with the occasional splatter of oil but her expression was friendly and curious. She was obviously young, either young twenties or below, but also obviously confident in herself and her abilities. A pair of goggles was nestled among the dark red hair of her forehead, which streamed down past her neck. Her armoured under suit was dark which hid most of the oil stains, over which was an open leather jacket. The belt around her waist was just below this and held both her multi-tool and pistol. A heavy looking backpack leaned against the chair next to her.

"Silva and sparkle to you Zhen and Gomez. I'm Roz, you've met Ian, and this is Henrietta and Ziggy. And pebble and scree Zhen, no worries. In one way or another Ian and I are pretty technical, can take most things apart and mostly put them back together again. I'm sure you'll be a lot of help to us."

A look of humorous devilment suddenly came across her face and she nodded her head in the direction of the man in the long coat, before giving him a wink.
"Just be careful if he asks you to hold anything for him. He's a bit fond of the old crash bang and wallops if you know what I mean."

Gomez comment evidently caught her by surprise but after an amused smile, her face became a little more serious.

"But yeah we aren't all here to rub the corners off and find the gems within. We've got two jobs we'd like your help with. First up and the most straightforward is a bounty hunt. Private detective named Yuri Delacroix. Apparently a bit of a specialist and thanks to a video Changying showed us, very adept at looking after himself and ending the lives of those looking for him. He's wanted dead or alive, so we might possibly want to edge on the safe side with him. He's also stolen some tech which is also wanted, preferably broken for some reason. From what we've been told he mostly likely has a girl with him, is looking to get off world, has a gambling problem and his usual haunts are the El Rey, Denis's, and the Fifth Ace. Also drives a blue JSI-brand Gravcar. The video we saw showed him at the El Rey about two hours ago."

She gave a yawn and stretched her arms back behind her shoulders. She'd been sitting down for too long, thankfully they'd be moving soon.
"That's the simple and possibly more dangerous job anyway and the one with shorter time constraints. The second job involves looking into the non delivery of an item from a lab recently bought over by Gorgon. Not fully sure of the situation there yet, but we thought we'd do a bit of background, before approaching and seeing what the sitch is."

She turned her head to look at all the others.
"Feel free to spike your pick and lay a claim of your own, but my thoughts are we should head to this El Rey place and cast about for clues and see what we do from there. Sound sparkle?"

One eyebrow raised, Zhen asks, "A bounty hunter? Appearances can truly be deceiving."

Noting the datapad on the desk, he steps forward and replays the video. "If this is two hours old, we need to move now. This man will be quick to ground. Does the bounty require he be living?"

"Also, what's my cut?" Zhen looks around the room, locking intense eyes with everyone in turn. "If everyone here is in, I hope there's quite a check to split."

Roz appeared amused by Zhen's raised eyebrow and grinned back.
"You know what they say about things that glitter? The hope is that he claps eyes on this face and lets his guard down figuring I'm no threat. That'll be your time to shine."

Standing up from her seat, while Zhen moved past to the datapad, she heaved the backpack over her shoulders.
"The one who called it is happy with him either way. Might be safer dead with moves like that though. The bounty is 25,000, with an extra 5,000 if we bring back the tech suitably damaged. Reasonable enough cut depending on how hard it is to find him."

Gomez snaps his fingers and says "Oh yeah the Gorgon job, I just got off that one yesterday, so I can def help with that."

He watches the video of the bounty hunter over Zhen's shoulder and sucks his teeth. "As for that guy, well I'll leave the fighting to Zhen here, but I might be able to help track him down." He pulls out his compad and starts scrolling though his contacts.

Ian grinned ear to ear as he finished the jury-rigged device in his hands and placed it in his coat pocket. With the absence of any preoccupations he was able to speak freely and his actual social nature was able to shine through the quiet air that he gives off when he's working on one of his little "toys" as he called them.

"30,000 creds for all details of the bounty to be fully explored between 7 people? That's like 43 hundred creds per ain't it?"

He grins and stares off into space for a moment, contemplating what 4,300 credits could get him.

"Well, any doubts I've had before are settled, I'm 101% in on this job."

Gomez scrolls through his extensive contact list. Plenty of gamblers, plenty of strikebreakers, but no Yuri Delacroix and no one that you know of having direct ties to him. You're fairly certain you know know where all the casinos Roz mentioned are however. The closest is the Fifth Ace, basically a block away from where you are now. The El Rey, the establishment shown in the video, is about a 20 minute drive across town.

"So, boss, have you got a ride? I suggest we split up and check at least two of our leads instead of wandering around looking conspicuous. Either way, let's head out."

Zhen turns and strides out of the room, leaning down to grab a ruggedized, hi-tech pack from just outside the door.

Ian looks over at roz and motions to the door

"We going to the casino?"

After thinking for a moment about what him immediately asking roz to go with him may implicate to other people Ian immediately lost his cool demeanor and seemed a bit flustered.

"It-uh-not in that way, y'know? I just figured going out-not going out-uhmm- leaving to run this errand, with another techie may be fun-erm-interesting, talking about how all the games are run and rigged and all."

After his stammering tangent Ian hides his face in the collar of his jacket and begins fiddling with an old cigarette lighter from his back pocket.

You hail a taxi. Its a bit cozy but you all manage to fit in. Apparently human drivers are still cheaper than pilot VIs on Genoa, and you're taken to your destination by a chatty old man who gives you his unsolicited hot takes on this year's psyball playoffs.

By the time you arrive at the El Rey, the rain has let up somewhat. The bright lights of the entertainment district are refracted through the drifting smog, beckoning the masses of Genoa into clubs and gambling parlors, tonics against the oppressive drudgery of their daily lives. There's not much foot traffic in front of the El Rey however. The casino is a simple two story building, reasonably well maintained, with not many windows. A glowing sign of a king counting his gold hangs above the front door, which is currently cordoned off with holographic police tape, marking the building as a crime scene. There are alleyways on either side of the building.

Ian steps out of the grav taxi and takes in the scene for a brief moment. After a few seconds of looking around in silence he puts his hand into his pocket and pulls out a coin, flips it, shrugs, and nonchalantly walks into the left alley while whistling an unfamiliar, somewhat jazzy tune.

Seeing the police tape, Gomez steps out of the taxi with his compad to his ear. Feigning a conversation, he heads straight for the door, "too preoccupied" to notice that anything is amiss.

Let's see how much the cops care about this crime scene, he thinks.

Zhen exits, looking for signs of a police presence while angling toward the right-hand alley.

The left alley appears empty except for a couple parked civilian cars and shattered glass from a window in the El Rey that looks like it was shot out from the inside.

The right-hand alley is contains dumpsters piled high with stinking trash bags, but no emergency vehicles of any kind. A service entrance about halfway down the building stands propped open.

Zhen quietly approaches the open service entrance and peeks around the corner into the building.

Ian casually rolls his sleeve up to his fingers and brushes any remaining glass and steps inside using the window. He is still whistling his song to his self and acting like nothing is out of the ordinary.

Ian stops after a few steps and looks back at the window and the glass outside of it.

"Oh.. so that's how our boy scurried off."

Ian steps back outside and searches for something,  perhaps a blood trail or torn fabric?

"No worries 'Big Bang'. Might as well head along and see seams we can uncover. I'd have to leave all the gambling to you though."
Waving a hand in front of her face, she shrugged back at him.
"This thing is like an open book. People always know when I'm bluffing."

The taxi was a little cramped, with so many larger bodies and equipment stuffed into a small space, and she was glad to ease herself out of it. For a moment she watched three of her colleagues all select different avenues to try and enter the building. Each looked as suitable as the other really. She was about to follow Gomez over the police tape when she noticed Ian examining something by a window. Moving down the alleyway, she stopped a couple of paces from him.

"Anything shiny?" she murmured in an undertone, her eyes following his along the ground.

The interior of the casino is dimly lit. The part of the casino you're in seems to be the restaurant/bar area, with booths and tables all in disarray. Directly across from you is the bar, with a door to the kitchen beyond. Several bottles behind there bar have been shattered by gunfire. To your right is the front door. Directly to the left of the bar is a hallway leading towards the far side of the building. Looking to your left from the window you entered there are several rows of gambling machines stretching to the back wall of the ground floor. The floor of the casino is littered with spent bullet casings and at least two distinct bloodstains. The second story appears open to the lower level, but you can't clearly make out what's up there. There is also a large broken window overlooking the lower level. Through the shattered glass you can make out a desk and office chair. There also seem to be an abundance of security cameras overlooking most areas of the casino. At first glance, the area appears to be deserted.

Ian looks a bit more closely at the scene to check for any signs of who hopped out this window and where they went.

The entrance appears to have been propped wide open with a wooden block. Inside is a short hallway, that opens out into a larger area where you can see the twinkling lights of gambling machines. Almost immediately to your left is a door hinged to swing both ways. On the right side of the hall slightly further down is a wide archway leading to another room.

"That's a good catch BB. Could be the one we are after or someone running away perhaps? I'll see if I can find anything else inside there."

Moving over to the shattered frame, she carefully gripped a portion that was free from glass, and stepped through into the Casino. She immediately took note of the abundant security camera's. It was probably too late to avoid being seen by these and in any case the information possibly contained was more important. There was a chance in any case that the footage might be stored on site too. The second floor was probably a good bet for this. Better take things one at a time though.

Moving carefully around the spent bullet casings she went to look more closely at the two bloodstains. The first thing to try and ascertain- where they from the same source or two different injuries?

As Gomez crosses the holographic barrier, the projector begins emitting a loud chirping alarm. You have entered an active crime scene, please remove yourself from the premises. This incident has been recorded.

If anyone is in the building, they definitely heard that. Nothing immediately happens though.

Hearing the blaring warning from the police banner, Zhen shakes his head and mutters, "Figured he was smarter than that." under his breath.

Making sure to avoid any security cameras, he moves toward the room at the back. As he moves, he calls, "Hello! Is anyone here? I didn't see anyone out front, so I'm coming back."

In his chosen line of work, Ian has become somewhat of an expert in the way things break. Upon closer inspection, you realize your initial appraisal was incorrect. There don't appear to be any bits of blood or scraps of clothing, and there appear to be multiple focal points for the window being broken. Continuing your inspection you identify several bullet impacts in the wall on the far side of the alley. It seems this window was blown out by gunfire from the inside, rather than a person leaping through.

Zhen presses himself out of the wall to stay out of the camera's line of sight. Rounding the corner through the wide archway you find yourself in a comfortable lounge. Comfortable chairs and couches surround a table with holographic projectors and a vid screen. Both appear powered down but based on the arrangement, this area seems to be for betting on races and sporting events. There are no obvious signs of a struggle here. To your right is a stairway leading upward to the second level. You notice two security cameras watching this room.

Gomez acts startled by the alarm and looks around like he just noticed there was anything amiss. "Hey can I still come in?" he asks loudly to the general vicinity. "I've got a whole lunch order for the office and Claudia is gonna be pissed if she can't get the special. Like fire me pissed. I need this job man."

The casino appears empty, though Gomez notices several security cameras watching the area. In front of you are tables and booths in disarray. To your right is the bar, thoroughly shot up. To you left you can see Ian and Roz moving outside the broken window. Just past the bar is a hallway leading right. Directly in front of you past the table are several rows of gambling machines. Overlooking the lower level is a large glass window that has been shattered. The floor of this area is littered with bullet casings and bloodstains.

Ian pulls a mangled cigarette out of a crumpled box in his pocket and sighs

"Yet another dead end in the great detective tales of Ian Collins."

As he was bringing his lighter to the cigarette he realizes what leaving a spent butt on the scene may tell the police and he puts his cigarette away. He turns around and looks at roz who seems to be thinking about something as well.

"The window's a dead end, just shot out by whoever was fighting here earlier."

Ian steps in again and smirks slightly.

"Guess we could search for something actually useful in here, then."

Right after his sentence was over Ian heard the siren from the police tape chirping and he chuckled to himself.

"Kind of a direct entry, huh?"

He didn't seem to be talking to anybody in particular but he had his head turned toward the main entrance of the casino.

Zhen pulls back, retracing his steps to the front of the casino. Calling out to the others, he pulls out his Compad: "Nobody home. I assume your search for his personal info came up empty, but did you try the cops? Surely they would help to find this man Yuri."

Zhen browses the popular social media apps, searching Yuri's name. "Do any of you have connections at the Citizen Registry? Perhaps you could get his information that way."

Ian sees Gomez walking through the front door, putting on quite a convincing "oblivious deliveryman" act for the security cameras. Surveying the room, it looks like a hell of a lot happened here only a few hours ago. It looks like the cops took the bodies away but left everything else more or less untouched. You're sure there's clues here somewhere.

Zhen finds Yuri Delacroix's social media fairly easily, but it seems he's conscious about sharing too much personal information online. His home address isn't terribly difficult to find either.

"Yeah, hold on another second, I'm gonna give e this place one more pass then I'll head out!"

Ian searches the littered floor for anything useful that the police may have left behind.

Roz looked over at Ian as he made his way over the former battlefield and gave him a grin, teeth showing brightly. She was clearly excited being somewhere where she obviously shouldn't
"I'd be really curious to see what's up there," she said nodding her head at the upper level.
"Not sure it would be really worth it though. Unless he had a claim here or a particular reason for coming."

Hearing Zhen's words, she fished her datapad from its sling, hanging down over her right thigh.
"To be honest Zhen, we'd only just started when we met you. Hadn't really done much digging."

Moving her fingers quickly across the screen, she quickly added one of her fake profiles to one of the most popular conversational and list based social media applications. Taking one of his images, she created a post online claiming to be a shorn exlover of Yuri's, who had been suddenly abandoned pregnant and alone, two days before their supposed wedding. Asking for any and all information pertaining to this man, she promised unholy vengeance.

Satisfied that this line might catch something, she bent down again to look closer at the bloodstains.

The crew spreads out around the main area of the ground floor, conducting their respective investigations.

Gomez inspects the ever watchful cameras. He's installed his fair share of these, and it looks like they have audio recording capacity. Maybe they caught something important on tape.

Ian inspects the area. Lots of debris everywhere. Rounding the bar, he sees an android lying on the ground against the wall, seemingly swept aside in the hasty clean up. Its shiny gold vest is riddled with bullet holes, but as you approach its eyes light up. "I am sorry, there has been an incident. This establishment is closed. No employee badge recognized. This area is for employees only."

Piecing together the fight that transpired here, Roz paces around the room. There is blood on the glass shards and a stain in a vaguely splattering pattern. Someone fell out that second story window and fell hard. A lone blood splatter and an overturned table, looks like someone got whacked with a heavy object, probably thrown from the direction of the hallway. Bullet holes behind the bar, bloody boot print on the counter, bloodstain a few feet away. Looks like Yuri vaulted the counter and beat a man to death next to it. You recognize this as probably where Changying's recording started. Another bloodstain across the room lines up with where the recording showed Yuri killing the final attacker.

It takes several minutes for Roz and Zhen to get any progress on their electronic investigations. After being bounced around several inquiry support menus, Zhen gets in touch with a very helpful clerk at the Department of Citizenship, Immigration Office. Over electronic chat, you get the following information: "Yuri Delacroix, age 37. Immigrated at age 10 as a refugee from Yorbund. Degree in computer science from Larkum Institute of Technology. Currently self employed, credit status favorable. He's sponsored the immigration of a woman named Priya Bosque 3 years ago, also from Yorbund. With this information is transmitted the official permanent addresses for both Yuri and Priya.

Roz gets a notification on her social media, a reply to her fake account. "Wow sry that hapned to u smh hes such a asshole cnt bleive hed be that dumb. I dated him  like 4 yrs ago, BIG TIME GAMBLER i think he has a prblm dumped me by txt. Whenvr we hooked up we alwys went to Cosmonats rest hotl so my husbandwoudlnt find out. I dumped that asshole too #livingmybestlife #menarepigs"

"Yes, thank you. That's exactly the information I needed. Good day."

Zhen ends the call, turning to Roz. "Looks like he's got a girlfriend. If I needed a place to hide out from bounty hunters who know my usual haunts, I know where I'd go."

"Let's move. I have a feeling he's not going to stay in any one place for long."

Zhen motions towards the taxi. "A couple could stay and poke around the crime scene if they'd like, but I'm useless here. I'm going to follow this lead for now, unless you've got a better one?"

Ian seems carefree and pours a drink from one of the few unsmashed bottles on the shelves behind the counter.

"Oh, dear, that seems a slight unfortunate. What happened to you, my metal compatriot?"

Ian sips his freshly poured drink and makes an approving face, slipping the bottle under his jacket. Ian looks up as Zhen makes his proposal.

"Yep, I'll be coming with ya, I would ask this here bot what would be in the bag our boy was carrying but I don't think it'd like to talk."

Roz took her time following the track of the bloodstains and tried to trace out roughly how the conflict might have gone. Looking up at the broken window above, she started to detail her thoughts, loud enough for the others to hear.
"Someone definitely came out of that top window, and came down hard. This next bit is guesswork, but I figure that's maybe wherever who was in charge of this place. Maybe Yuri was up there with them getting some cash or something before it all turned bloody. There's probably more evidence up there anyway."

At this there was beep from her datapad, and she withdrew it from its sling to find the reply. Grinning briefly she looked over at Zhen.
"I think you're right though. Not sure whatever might be up there will lead us to him quicker than what we have. Gems a plenty but we don't want him to slip free. I have the name of a hookup hotel he used to frequent, could try it, or his girlfriends place if you want to try that. I'm good to go anyway. We wait about much more and I'm going to start repairing that droid."

Ian looks back at the android and gives it a little smirk.

"No need, my fine sir, I'll be seeing myself out imminently."

Ian turns over his shoulder toward Zhen and Roz.

"Personally I think his girlfriend's place is a safe bet. The hotel's bound to have some low life bounty hunter gettin' it on when in stumbles our boy, right? Just trying to think like my prey here."

Ian leaves the way he entered as to not make extra noise A la police tape and attempts to hail a cab, looking back at the others with an expression that reads "well?".

"Could one of you techie folks get the camera data before we leave? It might help us out and, well, we've just been walking around here implicating ourselves so... you know." Gomez shrugs with his hands in his pockets.

Ian begins whistling his tune again as he turns away from the street and steps back inside the casino. He continues his tune as he climbs the stairs and walks to the security office, steps in and casually smashes the data storage box for the cameras.

"That should about do it, I'd bet."

Ian walks back down the stairs and steps back onto the sidewalk, holding up his thumb like a hitchhiker.

Striding to the taxi, Zhen opens the door and takes a seat. He taps the driver's seat, ordering, "Driver, take us to [Priya's address]. And make it quick."

Turning to the others piling into the car, he says, "Hopefully we'll find something more recent at Priya's place. Maybe a clue, maybe a witness. But we may also find Yuri. Keep your eyes open and trigger fingers ready."

"We're not taking him alive."

"That's very reassuring Zhen, makes me feel very confident," Gomez says as he stuffs himself into the taxi. "You were on the pep squad in secondary school weren't you?"

Henrietta, who had been standing watch outside while the new muscle poked around, got into the cab as they came back out and hailed the taxi.

"Oh, What did you find in there. Non one injured and bleeding out I hope?"

She slides into the cab seat and prepares herself for what would come next, making idle chit chat along the way to calm her nerves.

"If Yrui is at the girl's place, there might be a fight and she might end up in the wrong side. I hope things work out all right."
Her propensity towards peaceful solutions did not coat her thoughts about what would happen soon.

Ian shrugs at Henrietta.

"Only a damaged server robot."

As he got into the taxi he took the bottle he "borrowed" from the bar out of his jacket and takes a sip.

The cab zips quietly through the foggy night, taking you across town to a tall stone apartment building, Priya's apparent address. The main entrance is a glass door with an electronic keypad and call button. A parking garage stands to one side of it. The street is dead quiet, and apparently deserted.

Ian nods toward the building, his eyes on the rest of the crew, making sure to not directly face the building in case of any possible security cameras being mounted on the side.

"Probably cameras in there, no? Maybe we shouldn't go waltzing in."

Ian begins to whistle his tune again as he spins around and strolls casually in the direction of the parking garage, hoping that it is possible to gain entry to the building through it rather than going through the building that is highly likely to have multiple cameras watching all angles.

"This Yuri guy sure seems savvy if he's stealing tech, maybe he's tapped into the cameras in the building, who knows?" he thinks silently.

As the taxi pulled up, Roz slid her backpack down so she could grip it across her chest. While she couldn't claim to take up a lot of space on her own, the bag basically doubled her size. Held like this she was less likely to bump her new companions, though also totally blind to where they might be going.

Turning her head across in the squashed back seat towards Henrietta she made the impression of shrugging her shoulders, though she couldn't really move them.
"Nothing organic was there by the time we turned up. From what we saw in the video, this guy is pretty aggressive but there might have been some survivors. It's a fair point about his girlfriend though, we do know nothing about her. May be just another innocent pebble or a diamond in the rough looking to give us a cut."

She sighed and looked back at the backpack she was holding close.
"I'm all about the preservation of life when possible."
Except when there's a chance to turn tail and flee of course.

Standing on the street looking up at the building, she nodded at Ian's words.
"Not a bad call. Maybe worth seeing if there is a blue JSI-brand Gravcar in that garage first. Also though its good idea for us not to be all bunched together, we should stay in sight lines. If Yuri is as dangerous as that video suggests, we shouldn't let him quarry us piecemeal."

Hooking the bag over her shoulders again, she grinned broadly before following after Ian.
"I'm liable to shatter at a particularly loud fart."
