Description:
Height: 5’5”
Weight: 44 kilos
Age: 16
Skin: Dark blue
Eyes: Green
Hair: White
Appearance:
Vra’fa is to be commonly found wearing the long white flowing robes of her chosen role, that of an envoy. She does her best to maintain its pristine colour but the dual effects of being on a frontier world and her own energies leave it often looking a little shabby. As with all members of her caste, her face is soft and rounded, which along with her bright green eyes, give Vra’fa often an innocent and earnest expression. Her white hair is in a long braid, often coming over one of her shoulders and hanging down to her waist. Like the rest of her appearance, this will start the day looking perfect and will steadily become more tangled with sticks, leaves and other detritus as the day continues.
When she can get away with it, she will also be joined by a black furry toy of indistinct shape who she has named ‘Anda’. Naturally the appearance of this has often displeased her superiors who feel it detracts from her position.
Though her robes hide most of this, Vra’fa is quite thin, even for the water caste. She is also frail, and even with her daily consumption of supplements, the deficiency in her bones remain. Even the most innocuous accidents can cause her injury. Currently she is using a walking cane, and walking with some difficulty following a leg break shortly before her arrival.
Personality:
True to her appearance Vra’fa is both empathetic and soft-hearted. She strives to find or believe in the best when it comes to others and is almost unfailingly optimistic. While she is often naïve to the latter intentions of those around her, her empathy means that is quite skilled at reading the moods and feelings of others. She is a firm disciple of the ‘Greater good’, but in her idealistic mind this involves negotiation and agreement, rather than the more violent realities of war.
She loves to talk, both to listen and learn about those around her and to give her views on different subjects. One of the joys in her life is to wander off and explore, especially where there will be other people. She doesn’t particularly like to be on her own and will attach herself to other groups where possible.
She has an unreasonable phobia of blood, often falling to pieces at the sight of it. She isn’t particularly bothered by pain, which she has plenty of experience with, but the sight of her blood will often cause her to faint.
Despite her idealistic and soft hearted traits, there is a rich strain of stubbornness that runs through Vra’fa as well. Once she becomes convinced of a certain idea, or course of action it is difficult to shift her from this.
Background:
Dal’yth, the planet on which she was born is well known to be a particular haven of traders and attracts those from all over the Empire and even some from beyond. As such it had no shortage of Water caste and Vra’fa was born to one of the many families there. Her childhood was fairly unexceptional beyond her families worries about her, given her physical ailments. Her younger sister had been spared these and her parents hoped that it would be her that would be sent to the more dangerous locals and that Vra’fa might be given a safer opportunity.
However as she entered her teens it was soon recognised that Vra’fa had some considerable skills with languages and negotiation. This coupled with her enthusiasm and charm marked her out as a rising star among her contempories. While her soft hearted nature was recognised it had been assumed that she would grow out of this as she reached adulthood.
A year prior she had left her home planet for the first time as part of a negotiation team headed by the notable envoy Por'El Fi'rios Gras'fin along with a number of others. The experience was meant to blood the youngsters, providing them a chance to learn from the stern and cynical but also brilliant elder stateman. However Vra’fa soon attracted the ire of the chief negotiator and their relationship deteriorated to the extent that Vra’fa was sent home in disgrace on the eve of the final agreement.
Gras’fin was particularly scathing in his report back about the young Tau, noting her idealism, nativity and softheartedness as well as comments about her unkempt appearance.
It was largely due to this report that Vra’fa had been separated from the other initiates and sent to the frontier, her superiors hoping that the harsh realities of life out there would help her lose what they viewed as her childish perspective and mannerisms so that she could contribute in a more meaningful way to the Greater Good. For her part Vra’fa had been extremely frustrated with Gras’fin and believed his views were both dangerous and damaging to the long term goals of the Tau. She had initially been quite upset about being sent away in disgrace, but her natural optimism had soon resumed and she was determined to prove that she had been right all along.
Character goals.Long termIn the Long term Vra’fa would like to take part in a major negotiation with an Alien race, one that is currently at war with the Tau and bring them into the fold, to bring peace and growth where there was war.
She would also like her talents to be recognised and to be welcomed back from the frontier and to take up a more significant role in the growth and wellbeing of the Empire.
Medium termIn the medium term Vra’fa wants to negotiate a deal of some form, large or small that would have a tangible effect on the Tau empire, however small. Her belief in the Greater Good involves all others doing their upmost to help those around them, and so better the Tau as a whole. Secretly she would also like to prove her superiors wrong and that you don’t have to be cynical to be an effective envoy.
Short termSo far Vra’fa has yet to have a significant relationship of note with anyone on the frontier world. In the short term she would like to make a friend or to find someone who she can trust. While no man may be an island, Vra’fa is a continent and in her former life was used to having a wide social circle of friends and those she relied on.
She would also like to meet and if possible negotiate with the native inhabitants of the world.
Character FlawsFrailPhysically Vra’fa is quite weak and quite susceptible to injury. The main cause of this is a long term bone defect which is able to managed through the use of supplements but cannot cure. The deflect causes her bones to be brittle and easily broken. She currently has a broken leg which is slowly healing. (Will be fully healed in 3 months)
IdealistVra’fa is a firm believer that there is a ‘right way’ to do things, one that is often divorced from what is actually practically possible. She thinks that to abandon these would be more damaging to the Empire than anything else.
SoftheartedVra’fa also believes in the inner goodness of others and if you treat others with respect they will do the same back to you. She cannot resist helping others in need around her, regardless of the danger she might put herself or others in. She also has an almost endless capacity to forgive others, despite what they might have put her through.
Phobia-(blood)Vra’fa has a specific phobia to blood, especially her own but also those of Tau and other creatures. The sight of her own blood will cause her to faint immediately while that of others will cause her extreme discomfort and panic and wish to leave. Having to view or visit a battlefield is extremely distressing for her.
StubbornWhen she thinks that she is in the right, Vra’fa is extremely difficult to convince otherwise. She is liable to continue doing something even when told specifically not to if she believes in her action.
NPCsPor'la Dal'yth Prin’tagaAn envoy in training at the same time as Vra’fa, he was a year or two her senior but her talent soon resulted in them being paired together in a lot of classes. Their relationship has adapted and grown throughout the eight years of their education. At one time rivals, growing to sometime close allies and confidants. For the last few years Vra’fa had a large crush on Prin’taga and though the other was aware of it, neither brought the subject up. Prin’taga’s views have always been much more cynical and realistic than hers and thus he was able to work well with Por'El Fi'rios Gras'fin and even receive some words of thanks from the old envoy. They two have not spoke since Vra’fa was sent away in disgrace, their last interactions in the delegation all being angry as he naturally took Gras'fin's side. She has a sealed message from him that she has yet to open.
Por'la Dal'yth GiraraGirara is Vra’fa’s younger sister and only other sibling. Currently fifteen she is still in training back on their home world. Both sisters have endured a difficult relationship. As Vra’fa attracted most of the attention from their parents for both her frailty and precocious skill, Girara often found herself on the side-lines- neither as brilliant or as in need of care as her older sister, and without a card to play. From an early age she also had to look after her older sister, after Vra’fa inflicted injury on herself again and again. For many years she suffered in silence, her frustration and anger growing. It was only when Vra’fa returned home briefly in disgrace before being sent to the frontier, that the mask slipped, and for the first time Vra’fa got an idea of what her sister really felt about her. It is one of the few things than can induce depression in the envoy.
Por'El Fi'rios Gras'finThe notable envoy who is nearing the end of a great career, butted heads repeatedly with Vra’fa during their time together as part of the trade delegation he was leading. It began with strictures on Vra’fa’s appearance and grew to serious arguments between the two on the ethics of their actions and how the negotiations should proceed. Gras’fin viewed her as both disrespectful, a bad influence on the others and wholly unsuited to the role of envoy. Relations got so bad that they finally ended with him slapping her across the face from which she fell and broke her leg. Such an act was beneath him and would in fact have got him in serious trouble if she had reported it, especially considering the injuries she suffered. In his opinion, she drove him to this and the fact that she never reported the act has only increased his ardent dislike of her. A very real part of him wishes her ill on the frontier.
Fio’La Sa’Cea PiraashVra’fa’s close companion on her month long voyage back to Dal’yth following her dismissal from Por’El Gras’fin’s trade delegation. With the light tone of her skin, her strong and powerful build and her often caustic and blunt speaking style, the two appeared diametric opposites to many others on the ship. However in spite of this, or perhaps due to it, the two developed a real friendship and spent most of the month in each others company. While Vra’fa admired her friends habit of saying exactly what she thought, her confidence and skill with her hands, Piraash soon found herself enjoying the constant chatter from the water caste, her unwavering optimism and naivety and interest in everything. Piraash is the only person Vra’fa has told the exact details of why she was sent home in disgrace and is the recipient of her first ever kiss.
The Earth caste is a year older than Vra’fa and keen to gain as much experience as she can and takes up positions in a variety of different roles from medical, to mechanical, on transport ships to positions on different worlds. She is a polymath and is yet to decide on a particular specialty within the Earth Caste.
Despite knowing each other a relatively short time, each would consider the other among their closest friends and either would jump to the others aid if the situation demanded it.
