| Subject: Plague Days: A Free Form RPG (Writing Project) - STORY IS LIVE! [CLOSED] Fri May 25, 2018 9:19 am | |
| On the old forum we had a writing project/Free-Form RPG which took place at the very beginning of an apocalypse of epic proportions. There were no technical rules in so far as rolling dice or game-mastering. Everything was created and figured out by players and their prose. The only rules stated that players not do anything to dictate the actions or effects of actions on other players. So essentially, this is a writing group exploring a world of their creating and interacting with other people doing the same thing. - Original Recruitment Thread:
I have the creative bug right now and I want to shit it out from my brain through my fingertips and onto my laptop screen.
I am thinking of starting a completely free-form roleplay experience set just after the world has ended. I am talking days after. It will not be rules heavy, but more focused on the narrative - character development, story archs, completely open world, completely open imagination.
This would be my first time partaking in something like this and no, it is definitely not for everyone, but the result would be something akin to those of us who partake essentially writing our own novel(s) and forming it into something cohesive we could all be proud of. Post as much or as little as you like.
A little more on Free-Form Roleplay (FFRP): It can be structured or loose, it can have a goal, or just let things happen. The beauty of free-form RP is that it's free. There are no rules except those the players set for themselves. There are no scores or experience points unless the players involved want them. Everything is up to the players.
The "Rules" would be very few. Essentially, if you want to play be serious about posting. Be serious about your character. Be serious about the world. If you wanted to get involved, don't be the guy who decides to shoot everyone in the head while they sleep and rape their corpses. While this is FFRP, that would cut short the game/fun/work of other players for no other reason than to be a dick. Granted, PKing is a thing and could happen, but might have to come down to some simple dice rolls or something.
With that in mind, here would be basic "rules": The goal of FFRP is to provide an enjoyable experience not only to one's self, but also to the others participating in a scene. (In fact, this is probably the most important part; most of the enjoyment of the role-play is not in one's own posts, but how the other person responds, and what they do for the role-play.)
- Avoid "unblockable" and "forced" actions. If you are playing a character who is attacking or otherwise chasing another character, give them ways to avoid capture. Try to give the other player breathing room. The same goes for playing the defensive character: there should be few (if any) forced actions. Forced actions are, in effect, writing the other player's character without their consent. This is known as power-playing/power-gaming, and is generally not appreciated. The only time forcing actions is acceptable is with the consent of the other player. This can occur when their character is obviously under your character's complete control, or their character is willing to let yours do just about anything. Still, it is best to be avoided. Once again, please try to avoid power-play, as it tends to make RP less fun for those being around a power-gamer.
I will destroy power gamers with the thickest dick of Thor. However, I don't feel like anyone on this site is a power-gamer, so it shouldn't be an issue.
So, having read all that, who would be down for something like this? If I get enough bites, I will come up with a world to drop us all into. Keep in mind, I will be a player first and a "moderator of sorts" second. I will in no way be the game master, as there really shouldn't be one if what I am saying goes off without a hitch.
Right now, I know we have three (including myself) of the original writers back to get in on this. This is open to absolutely everyone on the site with no player limit. If you feel like getting your creativity flowing, then feel free to get in on this. +++ - Example PC Sheet (My Character):
Name: Dusty Maddsen
Age: 29 Height: 5' 10" Weight: 180 lbs. Hair: Light Brown Eyes: Green
When we first meet Dusty, he is wearing his camoflauge BDUs, combat boots, and soft cover as he is on his way to the Marine Corps base for routine training. Aside from a pocket knife which he carries with him always, he is not armed. He has a practical timepiece on his wrist and some chewing tobacco in his blouse pocket.
Personality: Dusty has a way of dealing with his problems by making jokes out of everything. He could be subjected to the worst of human misery and find a way to make someone laugh. While it is morbid, it is a coping mechanism. After one deployment to Afghanistan and three to Iraq, humor is his way of coping through the stress and scars - both physical and emotional - in which he was subjected to in the "Sand Box." He doesn't have many friends outside of the Corps as he finds it incredibly difficult to relate to the mundane problems of the "real world."
While thoughts of suicide have plagued him since his return home, he isn't one to give in to such things - or rather, hasn't yet. It isn't that he hates living, it is that he hates living with the demons of his past and what he had to do to survive in what he considered a pointless war that resulted in nothing more than devastation for devastation's sake. He wouldn't admit it to anyone, but he is searching for something to live for; he is searching for something worth fighting for.
Background: At the ripe age of 18, fresh out of highschool and full of naievette and bad ideas, Dusty met with his local Marine Corps recruiter after deciding that college was not for him. He didn't want to join the army, as he had been told repeatedly by his Uncle - a USMC Vietnam Vet - that they were "too soft," and he didn't want to join the Navy because the same Uncle had told him not so nice things about them. He wanted to be the best. And his recruiter was all too eager to fill his head with tales of adventure, women, action and everything else an 18 year old wanted to hear.
Three months later he was graduating boot camp - a lean, green, killing machine. Six months after that, his boots touched down in the rocky mountains of Afghanistan.

| I'm in.
We're starting from where we left off, and new players can enter in organically?

| Abolutely. I plan on starting right where we left off unless someone has objections to that. New players can come in organically wherever they see fit. | |

| Awesome. Very excited. If anyone is interested in catching up on what we have so far, I'm putting all the old posts into a google doc to keep it all together. It's here, if you want to read it. I'm still entering in posts, so it's not quite complete. | |

| For all the new people who may not have traveled this far down the recruitment thread, this is still open if there are enough people wanting to get involved in a no-rules, strictly narrative, story project. | |

| Given the current climate of the world, now seems like a very apt time to remind people that this free-form narrative story should be revived.
I am 100% down to revisit and build my character Dusty's story. Anyone else?

| If I free up some time, I can get on it. Still got work everyday and we are about to start a new term, so might be too stretched at the moment. | |
