Fire’s a destroyer, says the preacher up. We wield it like a blade to purify the unclean, to drive back the unholy, and reduce to ash all sinners who stand against us. When He walked among us, he brought fire to strike down His enemies, and the Imperium’s borders burned with the flames of faith.

But fire can be more than that.

Fire’s a preserver, said the sister-confessors, at whose feet the young Zejneba learned. When the world is cold and uncaring, we kindle it to warm and gladden our hearts; when darkness reigns, our torches and bonfires cast comforting light against it. Any warlord could have struck down their foes, but when He walked amongst us, he brought fire to light the way out of Old Night, and bring hope.

Zejneba Sadikovic learned to stay in the firelight when she was very young.

Kul - the backwater world she grew up on - was a blighted place. No-one quite knew why - bar-room brawls often broke out over which grimly portentous explanation was right (warp storm, daemon cultists, exceedingly stealthy orks) - but most agreed that, whatever had happened to Kul, the Warp had done it. Some corrupting shadow had passed over the world, leaving something predatory in its wake, that stirred undulating coils across the prairie each night to snatch the unwary. Every few weeks, the colonists would wake up to find one of their number had gone missing; every few weeks, people would huddle closer to their bonfires and pray. Zejneba’s fathers taught her all the murmured prayers, the quasi-sanctioned symbols of light and purity to daub on herself and above every door.

Most people stayed away from this benighted world, but, just as surely, others were drawn past the naval cordon to study and unlock Kul’s mysteries. Some were recidivists, free-thinkers, would-be traitors who fancied themselves daemonologists and cultists - but among these were the Order of the Occult Hand, a minor Dialogous branch of the Sororitas, who lived in the most accursed worlds to prove that His light could never be extinguished. From the moment that she saw them, Zejneba was in awe of these women. Brave and serene, they came to understand, to enlighten and be enlightened, and illuminate with the Emperor’s grace, and she loved them.

The young Ms. Sadikovic made herself (or so she hoped) indispensable among the Order, fetching and carrying, carrying messages and waiting wide-eyed at the back of sermons on every topic the Occult Hand touched upon, hearing truths and teaching she’d never dreamed about from these holy members of the Sororitas. They indulged her at first - with a kind of amused detachment at this awestruck native slinking into their monastery. In time, however, they began to find her own bright fierce faith genuinely useful to their own devotion to keeping the flame of Imperial worship alive. She was inducted as a Lay-Sister; since she’d never been through the Schola, she’d never advance far in the Order, but was content to serve as an amanuensis for the more senior Sisters, a role she flourished in.

And then, one day, a cowled visitor from beyond the stars came into town. He strode in there as if he owned the place (which, by his account, he did - something about the Order being an ‘obvious front’), and asked to collect on his investments - brave, open-minded-but faithful servants and assistants for his work, for some organisation calling itself the Inquisition. Sister Zejneba - a loyal, bright, but ultimately disposable asset - was gently pushed to the front of the queue, to be taken aboard this man’s ship. ‘The Inquisition!’ She was sure this work would be exciting!
