The House of Robicheaux cannot be called wealthy by any extent. Their private spire in Sibellus barely pokes above the clouds, their summer home in Tarsus barely so fashionably cold as to warrant an overcoat, their pleasure yacht not even capable of warp travel. What they lack in material wealth, however, they make up for in their connections. Bookkeepers and barristers, scions of House Robicheaux have served as seneschals and advisors to the most powerful of governors and rogue traders. Particularly honored among the Robicheauxs are their Matchmakers, detectives and confidants dedicated to finding the most appropriate and advantageous marriages for young noble lords and ladies on Scintilla. The Matchmakers’ journals contain an array of notes and algorithms that they use to meticulously weigh each potential suitor for their charges. Of course, it is not uncommon for a naive and rebellious scion to fall prey to some dashing downhive rake or saucy harlot, in which case the Robicheaux Matchmakers are equally adept in making sure these affairs come to a quick and discrete end.
This was the path Dorian Robichaeux was to walk. As a young and capable Matchmaker, Dorian was granted the particular honor of accompanying Pasquale Jonquin (one of the unwed nephews of the renowned Lord-Captain Jonquin Saul) on a tour through the coreward regions of the Koronus Expanse. Dorian saw many sights as a member of the Captain’s retinue, and experienced luxuries unknown to Imperial space. As Captain Saul dined with various noblewomen in far flung retreats, Dorian studied and appraised each of them. A number of potential suitors presented themselves, most of them suboptimal but none more troubling than one “Vivitrix Shaw.” A most charming adventurer, Vivitrix wormed her way into Pasquale’s retinue and the captain quickly became enamoured with her. Dorian protested that elegant as she was, the adventurer was almost completely lacking in assets, to say nothing of her lowly upbringing as the daughter of some petty planetary governor. To wed her would be an unspeakable embarrassment! But Vivitrix had the captain’s ear, and he simply would not listen to reason. Dorian began focusing his attention exclusively on Vivitrix, seeking a flaw to exploit. He made note of her 6 favored handmaidens, and how every 6 days she would retreat to her chambers at the 6th bell for 6 uninterrupted hours. Acting decisively, Dorian moved to end the tryst; a shot from across the vessel’s hydroponic park and through Vivitrix’s chamber window sufficed. When Pasquale learned of her death, he was incensed. Dorian was clapped in irons and thrown in the brig.
Dorian has of course expected his charge to be upset, but had hoped the captain would understand why the Matchmaker had to perform his duties. Unfortunately, this was not the case as Pasquale swore to brand Dorian as a traitor and use his wealth to destroy the reputation of the Robicheaux family. As time dragged on Dorian began to lose hope, fearing that the captain would kill him, or worse, drag his name through the mud. It was then the Dorian was visited by a trio of individuals dressed as midshipmen who declared themselves to be agents of the Inquisition, who had been tracking the witch Vivitrix Shaw for years. She had evaded assassination for years, and the agents were shocked when they found their work had been done for them. The agents offered Dorian freedom in exchange for his services in the Inquisition. Dorian of course accepted, sensing that having acted as an acolyte in the Inquisition would be a tremendous boast at soires (His rivals would be floored!). Slipping away at the next port, Dorian was transported back home, where to his dismay he found his reputation and that of his family’s already sullied. Pasquale Saul had spent considerable resources to besmirch the expertise of Robicheaux Matchmakers. Dorian surmised that Vivtrix must have worked a dark hex upon him, for it was unimaginable that one so eminent as the nephew of Lord-Captain Jonquin Saul would be so unjust. It could only have been this witch! Dorian swore vengeance upon the vile cultists who brought him ruin, and set out for the Tricorn Palace taking with him the barest of essentials: his heirloom long-las, his tools, his servitor butler Barnabas, several trunks of fashionable clothes, three brocade coats in the latest style, a spare wig, spare wig powder, various shampoos and moisturizers, several bottles of amesec from his family’s wine cellar, cooler of vacc-frozen grox fillets, a set of crystal wine goblets, and the third best silverware.
