| When Bell mentioned denizens of Crow's Foot preferring to cut through the bullshit, she had to keep from rolling her eyes. She and Bazso had spoken about that more than once early on, and every time they had laughed at her for balking at the unbearable directness.
"We're smugglers and bloody good ones too. We've gotten crews onto military boats, we've gotten men off the gallows, and we can handle the spirit stuff that most other smugglers balk at. If it needs moving, we can move it, whether or not the object in question is yet within your possession." She takes a sip of the wine, and then another - her mouth is so dry. She is not sure that she has gotten an accurate read on Bell, but she had a least one more trick up her sleeve if "cutting through the bullshit" did not suffice.

| Bell nodded, tilting his head and looking on with an impression of mild approval. He exchanged a quick glance with Weaver, revealing a hint of impatience.
"All right. Well, good to know who to call should we need it. That all?" _________________ "Don't mess with me, lady. I've been drinking with skeletons."

| FlashbackBazso tended to be tight lipped about the Crows. What little she had managed to pry out of them in the past was feeling particularly sparse. And if course now there's no way for me to ask for their help. When we finally get *shudder* Tom out of our hair, I'll figure out how to see Baz but for now... She absently twists a lock of hair, running through the very short list of people who might have insight regarding this particular breed of corvidae. Maybe it is time to make some new friends... " Now we got problems And I don't think we can solve them You made a really deep cut And baby now we got bad blood" The well worn mandolin has long been her most reliable ally, but Cadence is glad that her older cousin is in the bar too. She tries to keeps the energy high, and when between sets, chats with patrons. With a little luck, she would land on some folks who were not only talkative, but also knew a thing or two about the Crow's. Marius was her secret weapon; a nudge here, a round of drinks there, moreover people often rehashed a topic after the question asker was no longer around. | |

| Marius wasn't much of a conversationalist, but Cadence's performance made it easy. Drink and song had a way of loosening people's lips. Besides, his role was simple: identify people who might have the information they sought. When he found good prospects, he would signal Cadence and let her handle the rest.
So he sat, chatted, watched, and listened.

| It's a fruitful night at the Inn for the Phantoms - the pair walk away with not one, but two leads on items the Crow's are either actively looking for - or in need of.
One particularly tipsy, mustached man was only too eager to share the gossip of how the Crow's were in a bind - they need to get rid of some "official," but don't have the means to do it with the discretion required. Ever the creative-thinking entrepreneurs, the idea of smuggling a poison that's especially hard to detect readily springs to mind - such as Oyster of the Wastes, a mushroom from the deathlands.
The man also mentions an ambitious plot brewing among the crew - rumored to be initiated by Bell - to obtain a deathspeaker, an extraordinarily rare sparkcraft device that emits a signal resonating through the Ghost Field. Their aim is to lure Roric's ghost to them to learn who killed him and exact their revenge accordingly - although many fear they are playing with fire and may attract many more nasty ghosts than just Roric... _________________ "Don't mess with me, lady. | Echo knew that heritage did not matter in the street of Doskvol, particularly in Crow's Foot, but Cadence was fast tiring of being spoken down to by the likes of whom her household staff would have thrown out on their ear. Especially, when she knew that the Phantoms' services would be of use to the Crows. The most frustrating part of it all was that it was the Phantoms who had a passing indifference in what the Crow's wanted and not the other way around. Bell and his stupid smug face did not even know that he was being playing like a chump.
Or does he? What if they heard that someone had been asking about them at Esme's? Or if one of Bazso's crew poisoned the well and we are the ones being played?
She forced herself to loosen her white-knuckled grip on the glass and took a breath to remember to keep up appearances.
"Not quite. Maybe our next conversation could take place somewhere that can whet the appetite for talk of tensions and détentes. We could have had a chat over a mushroom bisque and I would have insinuated that we would be willing to acquire Oysters of the Waste... But since we are in Crow's Foot, I have to say outright that you ought also be interested in our ability to find and transport spirits, or even a specific spirit." She laughs ruefully, thinking about how Bazso would have mocked this attempt to "cut through the bullshit"
"I'm sorry if that was still a bit long winded... Old habits and all."
She sits back and tries to gauge Weaver and Bell's reaction.

| Bell's carefully composed, blank expression slipped for a moment as Echo mentioned not only poisonous mushrooms, but also finding a specific spirit. Weaver also leaned forward, eyebrows raised and watching her superior closely.
Bell dropped his voice low.
"Who told you we were interested in such...goods?"
He leaned back, polishing off his wine glass and narrowing his eyes.
"We would indeed pay handsomely for the mushrooms and a deathspeaker. If you can indeed deliver on them, while keeping it under the wraps." _________________ "Don't mess with me, lady. I've been drinking with skeletons."

| "We untangled gossip and rumors to learn of your interests." She lets Weaver's movement draw her eye and then looks back to Bell, not indicating awareness of the shift in the latter's visage.
"There is a thread that we could follow in an attempt to locate the spool, but perhaps that is a topic for latter this evening. Not wanting to waste the generosity of your time, I would suggest that tonight we might focus on," she begins, raising a hand to count off on her fingers.
Bell and Weaver seemed well engaged and Echo was determined to keep them at the table for as long as it took for Rake and Ari to figure out how they would proceed. Her very best case scenario now included seeing a way to use of the Crows to smooth things over with the Lampblacks; many, many possible birds with this one stone.
"These acquisitions, the value of delivery and the added value of discretion."

| Echo seemed to have secured the Crows' attention, so Rake took his time looking around the room, trying to find a dusty overlooked corner or a crack in the walls large enough for the box. He shifted his sight to the ghost field. Its energy often echoed with the events of the recent past, so perhaps he could see a gap signaling what the Crows ignored. The elevator could still work, but it wouldn't hurt to have multiple options. | |
