Background:
Caedmon is a calculating, reserved Battle-Brother, of few words and an intense gaze. But though his eyes look dead to the world, in them burn the embers of what had once been an inferno.
Though of the Librarium, Caedmon demonstrated an impetuosity more becoming of the Assault Companies, frequently pressing, harassing and challenging the foe in battle rather than providing insight. He thought to burnish and temper his martial valor in this manner, but he failed to see that this was naught but arrogance, and his squad would pay the price for his hubris.
In a chance encounter with the Chaos Sorcerer Lord known as Kurgan the Cataclyst, he saw in one being the ultimate antithesis of his existence; a powerful psyker utterly dedicated to the ruin of the Imperium he served. Instead of backing off and alerting Command to his presence, he broke cover and challenged the "cowardly conjurer" to a duel. Kurgan was amused, and proceeded to dismantle Caedmon with contemptuous ease, before forcing him to watch as his pack of summoned demons and his warband torturously slaughtered the rest of Caedmon's Battle-Brothers. But when Kurgan moved in to finish Caedmon, he found that his warp-spawned magicks did not avail him against the Battle-Brother. He was amused, and taking it as a sign from the Dark Gods, he told Caedmon to live and grow stronger, so crushing him would have more meaning.
Caedmon was hailed as a champion for surviving; an accolade which grated against his sense of honour and righteousness. But before he could explain the truth, he was seconded to the Deathwatch - an "honour" he could not refuse. Now in his new squad, he seeks strength in mind, body and spirit; if only to do right by the brothers who died for his sin. | |
