PostSubject: Mire   Mire EmptyMon May 14, 2018 9:00 pm

Rain, mud, more rain, more mud, and very little solid ground in the form of slate slabs. From the charts this place was called Mire. This is the world Christina Halfex found herself on after stepping out from her escape pod. The last thing she remembers is her loyal crew members holding the breach to the escape pod as Khorne Berzerkers, part of her crew who turned on her, ripped through them. If it wasn't for Zigg she probably would of never made it off the Endless Pain.

Zigg had packed up the survival gear before the escape pod sunk beneath the mud and lead Christina to solid ground. Sporting a cloak (quickly made from a tarp) now Christina and Zigg started a journey for shelter and solid ground. They found the solid ground at least and possibly some shelter. An encampment of some kind with large blooms of smoke drifting from it. The air smells of flesh and meat being cooked.

Zigg sniffs the air, "Smells like someone iz cookin' humies, boz."

Christina looks up from her chart, a frown visible through the fiery red hair matted across her face from the constant downpour. "I can smell it, Zigg," she spat, "use your eyes, not your stomach; are any of the natives approaching our position. Even in this mess, a blind grox could have seen our landing."

She growled in frustration. The seas of the warp had been fickle today; it wasn't enough to have deposed her as captain... no, it also had to dump her in this fetid hellhole with naught but the brutish first mate. Though, she mused, her brute had kept her alive long enough to flee so she had that to be thankful for.

She pushed the hair from her eyes, scanning the marsh. The sweet smell of cooking human flesh filled her nose, cutting through the smell of the rain and decaying wetlands around her. She inhaled deeply, noting the angle of the rainfall, trying to discern the direction of the wind and the where the flesh was being prepared.

Spoiler:

"Alright, I have a heading Zigg." She smiled. "First order of business: I should see if the natives are suitable guides and, possibly, deckhands." She turned to the hulking greenskin. "Your approach should be quiet. I want to know how many there are and whether they are worth being wary of."

She stood up straighter, preening herself. "Though I doubt it, it is clear that the Warp sees fit to pose a challenge." She frowned at the the singed cuffs of her jacket, artifacts of the many near misses her gaudy garments had suffered in their escape. She shed the jacket, tossing it into the pod, exposing her lithe torso, clad in her embellished carapace, exposing almost unwise tracts of porcelain skin between the plates.

"And even if they are dangerous, I will ensure they are..." she grinned, "thoroughly disarmed. Follow me."

Zigg grumbles at Christina's orders, "Snek? Me ain't no snekky git! But youz the boz."

Zigg follows Christina towards the encampment. He splits off from her just before the encampment comes into better visual range.

Christina can now make out everything. A medium sized village of sorts. Worn down shelters that have repairs that probably date back decades. A feast of sorts is happening in the middle of the village where large cooking fires have been erected.

Sickly beings are gorging themselves on meat and flesh. The captain's ear's catch the wailing scream of a man. She spots him, naked and healthy, running in a dazed and confused state. He's captured and gutted on the spot. A few sickly beings eat his bowls as his body is then dragged towards one of the cooking pits and his body is pinned up and spun around like a pig would be. Before that though they remove his brain and bring it to a large hut on the other side of the village.

Christina's eyes had been so fixed on the spectacle that she didn't notice that Zigg had returned. Maybe he was sneakier then he thought.

"I countz around 30 of the sickly humies. No good for crew. 4 bigger and nastierz humies. Then something bigz in that large hut."

Christina, eyes still fixed on the spectacle, mulled over the information the surprisingly stealthy brute had relayed to her. His approach had been nigh undetectable; maybe her own talents had begun to rub off on the greenskin over his stint as her first mate. Or maybe he hailed from those sneakier lines of ork heritage. She smiled slightly; as if she could be bothered to know the difference.

She stowed away this observation for later consideration. While he could be very useful in this dark moment, if the ork became too competant she'd need to promote a new first mate after making an example of him. After all, she was captain, and damned be any who thought to match her competance in any way.

Her thoughts returned to the village. 34 targets and one potential threat. The tribesmen were unhealthy; she doubted even the full might of the mob would present even the slightest threat to her. Her blade was deadly to even the most competant foes and her speed would ensure they had no means to bring their mass to bear. The 4 "nastierz humies" were likewise uninteresting. If the tribesmen were the dirt beneath her knee-high boots, those men were the worms; better than their fellows but still unworthy of HER consideration. The mysterious hut, however, brought pasue to her egoism. The warp had been fickle enough in the last 48 hours and it would not surprise her in the least if the foe within was significantly more dangerous. While it might merely be an elder, some sort of false prophet who was given the brains of victims for ritualistic reasons, things were never so simple in the Vortex. For all Christina knew, it could be one of Tzeentch's damned sorcerers or, worse, a visiting daemon prince receiving tribute from worshippers. Talented though she may be, Christina knew that no amount of "diplomacy" or force would protect her from such foes. Though she longed to take out her frustrations on the pathetic tribe - preferably by showing them, slowly and delicately, how to properly disembowel a man - it would have to wait.

"The hut is an issue, Zigg. It would be best to wait and observe their feast; the hut's resident will have to show itself eventually. I am surprised none have gone off to inspect the pod. Or if they have, they will return and may discover our vantage. If caution rewards us, we can deal with them as we see fit and find a way towards more "civilized" people..."

A particularly strong gust of wind blew more of the rain into her eyes. She cursed silently.

"...if any can possibly exist in this squallor. And... though I want to know who leads the filth, I cannot wait forever. I will give orders for our approach at that time. For now, pay attention and alert me to any scouts that approach while I keep an eye on their 'feast'. Understood, sailor?"

As Chrsitina found better cover, her thoughts drifted over the events that had led up to his miserable situation...

Their recent boarding operations had gone splendidly. Her crew had easily overrun the defenders of the lost merchant vessel and made quick work of their superiors. Leading the assault was her boarding specilaist, Nat Bloodbane, who had at one point torn the head from ships astropath with his bare hands. The man had more in common with the orcs aboard the Endless Pain than human crew; he was a mountain of a man, known as a Frost Father on his homeworld of... whatever it was called: Christina often tuned out what the brute said outside of the raids. He was an asset, certainly, and had never questioned a direct order. His desire for bloodshed overrode the reasoning that would have warned him of the near suicidal nature of some of his orders. Irritatingly, none of those orders had ever been sufficiently suicidal. Though Christina would be glad to be rid of him, it seemed the God of his homeworld was insistent that the bastard survive.

The debauchery that followed such raids was as depraved as ever... save for Nat, whose proclivities for draining bottles of fine amesec with no regard for its quality and elegance, was replaced by a sort of discomforting brooding. Something was amiss with the man and it had not gone unnoticed by his captain. Near the height of their celebration, the merchant captain had been brought before Christina, still clad in his captain's vestments with his holster at his side. She recalled the terror in his eyes, knowing that his  life was most certainly forfeit. It had been delicious, watching him squirm under her gaze. It had all been perfect; a successful raid to be followed by the debasement and death of a foolish captain that dared sail the warp within her notice.

She glanced down at the holster at her side, currently holding the elegantly embossed plasma pistol that had once belonged to the captain. To think that such a weapon would have caused the barbarian to mutiny boggled the mind.

She shook her head. There would be time to reminisce later. For now, she returned her attention to the village cannibals, desperately hoping that her her paranoid musings regarding the hut's occupant were misplaced.

Christina waited and waited for the large being in the hut to reveal itself. With night settling in on planet the being probably wasn't going to come out. It looks like it was content on staying in there for the time being.

Further observation of the village showed that the healthy men were some sort of void crew. Their matching uniforms were piled up and left to soak in the rain and mud. They must of ended up on this forsaken place like the Pirate Princess. Maybe that's why they never went looking for her pod. They were preoccupied with others. Now there was nothing left of her pod as it sunk beneath the mud. No one from this planet knew she was here... yet.

The village feast was winding down. The fires put out and the villagers returned to their huts. A few two man patrols made the rounds on he village parameter but that was it.

"Shouldz we set up camp, boz?" Zigg asks his captain.

Christina frowned. Her patience, of course, had not been rewarded. She should have suspected as much would be the case. Nightfall had fallen more quickly than she'd expected however, so it appeared any attempts at diplomacy would have to wait until the morning. She cursed.

"There's hardly anywhere to set up a defensible camp in this filth, Zigg. And I'd rather not try to make nice with the locals in the darkness."

She pondered the problem. While her immaculate visage and poise was her greatest strength, it would most certainly be less useful against the cannibalistic degenerates. Her physical gifts would have to compensate.

"When it is fully night," she began, "I will acquire those discarded uniforms from the camp between patrols. For now, we avoid them and find the most stable ground we can within sight of the camp. You wait there. When I return, any information those men had on them may guide us to the nearest port. If not, come dawn, I will 'convince' their leader to guide us. I do not wish to soil my blade on such wretches; it is beneath me. If they are so foolish as to try and stop me, however..."

She grinned. "You are free to crush any who pursue me."

---

A suitable vantage found, and night shrouding the village, Christina stole off into the camp. She had used the brief twilight to observe the patrols, seeking a potential gap that would allow her easiest passage to the pile of discarded uniforms. Her faced screwed up in concentration, Christina stealthily slunk towards her prize. It irked her greatly - such grotesque subtlety was hardly befitting of a captain of her stature - but it seemed far preferable than bearing the stench of a prolonged negotiation with the foul creatures. Though she was unfamiliar with this particular brand of skullduggery, she was certain her natural grace would allow her to go unnoticed.

Christina returned to the high ground, uniforms tucked under her arms. Her infiltration had been touch and go for a moment; she'd almost forgotten where exactly the uniforms had been stacked and narrowly avoided the circling guard patrols on her way out of the camp. Fortunately, she had been right to trust in the lightness of her step, and had made away with her prize.

She sighed, lamenting her misfortunes yet again. From Captain to sneakthief, reduced to pilfering the clothing of the dead for information. "A thousand curses on you, Nat Bloodbane," she grumbled to herself, "when I find you..." She began to lay out and go through the uniforms, checking for insignias, rifling through pockets, searching them for anything that might identify their former wearers. Christina hoped that the savages had been more interested in the meat than anything the now-deceased had been carrying. If she was lucky, one of them may have possessed a dataslate or some likewise useful tools that could aid her in navigating to civilization.

Rolls:

Christina tossed aside the last uniform in digust. Apart from the smell (honestly, had their former owners ever heard of hygiene?), they were completely uninteresting. She could discern nothing from the ragged tatters of their uniforms; if they had any insignia it didn't stand out to her. Anything else the crewmen had had on them was gone as well. It seemed she was left with no choice.

"Alright, Zigg. As much as it pains me, and not in the good way, I must parlay with the savages. Come sunrise, diplomacy will be in order. Obviously, I'll do the talking."

She sat on a dry - well, drier than the sodden earth, at least - rock and pondered her strategy for engaging with the tribe. "What supplies did you manage to retrieve from the drop pod, Zigg? I may need something to barter with. While I would normally have no doubts about such a meeting, these foul beings are not my preferred audience."

--- As the star feebly lights the fetid swamp ---

Having taken first watch for the sake of rest, Christina awoke, huddled in a small ball atop a (slightly) drier outcropping. The sleep had been fitful and she awoke constantly at the thought of an ambush. Rising to her feet, she brushed off the leaves and muck that had begun to accumulate on her carapace. First impressions were everything, of course. She gestured for Zigg to come over to her.

"I'm going to parlay with their leader. You are to follow behind me and keep an eye out for any aggression from the natives. Speak not a word unless addressed and, as usual, you are not to question a word I speak." She sighed, shaking out small bits of detritus from her fiery red hair. "Though I doubt they'll be of any help, I cannot wait around in thisfilth for any longer."

Then, squaring her shoulders and mantling herself with the air of authority normally reserved for inspecting The Endless Pain, she strode purposefully down into the village.

Breaking the perimeter of huts, she oriented herself opposite the hut of their apparent leader, separated from it by the fire spit, still adorned with with a few charred bones from last nights victim. She glared balefully at any of the degenerate natives that took interest in them before exclaiming, in the most commanding tone she could muster,:

"I am Captain Halfex. I require the audience of your leaders immediately, for I desire direction to this planet's nearest port of call so that I may return to my ship. Who among you bears the authority to grant this request?"

Christina walks into the village like she owned the place. The villagers poke their heads out from their huts. Some are fearful of her but other like their lips in hunger until they spot the massive hulk of Zigg over her shoulder... then everyone is fearful.

Christina is halted by four particular ugly villagers. They're bigger but also more disease ridden. They have nasty looking spears dripping with something off the jagged metal spear tips. These must be the bigger and nastier humans Zigg mentioned before.

"Seems we missed on, Gor." One hisses.

"Nah, this one is different, Tiff." It sniffs the air, "To clean..."

The biggest one pushes past the two talking, "Captain Halfex, it's a pleasure to eat... meet you. I'm Reek." Reek says smiling showing his gnarly and rotten teeth, "Our leader is indisposed at the moment maybe we can..."

"A captain! A captain has come to my village!" A high pitched voice says from within the large hut.

Then something massive and grotesque comes waddling out, "Not often we get anyone of prestige here. Most off worlders go to Virolous."

Reek turns towards the bigger human, 'Sire, she and her friend are not visiting...they are lost."

"Oh." Is all it has to say in return.

She turns her glare upon Reek. "Reek, was it? Fitting." She let a smile creep onto her face. "A captain such as myself is never lost, Reek. I simply wish to make good time, and who better to ask than those who make their home in the lands I travel through?"

Softening slightly, she faced their blubbery leader, completely ignoring any response that Reek might show to her comment. "A pleasure to meet you, baron of these mires, may the rains ever unearth sustenance for your people." Virolous, she thought, that must be the port she was looking for. "There is no need to sound so put out, baron" she smiled ingratiatingly, "I do not intend to spend much more time planetside neither here nor in Virolous, though this opportunity to witness some of the true local custom has been most..."

She briefly scanned the village, pausing for effect.

"engaging, to say the least. Though a brief break in the weather wouldn't be amiss. But I digress."

She gestured to Zigg. "My first mate lost track of our maps in the swamps during our trip through the countryside. Though I could, with time, chart us a course back to Virolous, I felt it would be a better use of my time to seek a native guide and use that misfortune to get a taste of the local color, fancy? Of course, I am more than willing to compensate you and your people generously for expediting my arrival."

She turned back to Reek, her smile turning devilish. "You spoke on behalf of your leader on my arrival, did you not? Would that make you the most direct enforcer of his will? Maybe you would be best served to lead us to port?"

The large blob of humanity seems taken back by Christina's words, "There's not much to look at... anywhere. But who am I to judge? You've probably seen many planets!"

Zigg huffs at the comment that he lost the "maps". He knows what Christina is doing and keeps his mouth shut.

Reek glares at Christina, "I am the head of the Death Priests in this village. Second only to Megascolides." He says pointing to the massive human who smiles and waves.

Reek speaks to Megascolides, "Do you wish for these foreigners to return to Virolous, sire? Do you not want to see the planets this captain has been to?" He asks with a smile.

"I've had my fill of memories, Reek. Help guide the captain and her companion back. She did say there would be a reward, correct?"

Reek grumbles and looks back at Zigg and the Pirate Princess, "The reward must be paid upfront and that's final."

Christina smiled. "Is it not your lord Megascolides' place to make final decisions of that sort? Or maybe I am unfamailiar with your tribe's hierarchical structure, how fascinating..."

She paused for a moment, placing her hand upon her face and tapping her nose, seemingly lost in thought. "Clearly you can observe that I do not cart around the entire wealth of my vessel. My first mate is strong, but I would need a village's worth of him to even move half my holdings." She continued tapping away, then snapped her fingers. "Ah! As a 'deposit' in good faith, I do have the remaining supplies from our little jaunt across the countryside. I am willing to express my benevolence and patience by leaving some sustenance for your tribe, Megascolides. If the trip will be relatively brief, we can leave the entirity with you, save one meal for the trip. I'm certain your people will be most pleased with the additional food."

She smirked to herself; the tasteless nutritional foodstuffs of the drop pod were far below what she was happy, let alone willing, to ingest. Such meager rations would be far better used to barter with the savages; she had no qualms accepting mild hunger pangs rather than eat such gruel. The amasec, on the other hand, was some of her own stash. She would simply have to subsist on the liquid calories for the time being. While beneath her, the entire situation was beneath her, and it was small price to pay to get out of the stinking, foul swamps of this decrepit place.

"But there is much daylight remaining. I will leave it to you and your people, Megascolides, to divvy up those rations. We should make haste, Reek; I have important business to attend to and have already been delayed long enough on this expedition."

Magascolides gladly accepts the meager award. It seem the gift as a gesture is more pleasing then the gift itself, "A very fine award, Captain. Reek, see that these two get to Virolous in one piece."

Reek glares at Zigg and Christina as he leads them out from the village. After they get to the permiter the villagers swarm to the rations Christina has left. The remaining Death Priest have to beat them back to restore order.

++++

It truly never stops raining on this planet Christina found. Rain was always coming down. It was miserable.

The trek had been long and treacherous crossing through bogs and swamps. Reek was a good guide taking them along the best paths and around trouble.

That trouble being demons. Here Nurgle demons were a dime a dozen. Plague Bearers and Plague Drones stalked the many swamps and bogs.

Reek had called a halt to their march across a swamp. Christina could see why. Someone had erected some makeshift fort right along the best path.

"This is new." Reek says to no in particular.

Its occupied as light can be seen through the cracks and holes in the fort walls. Guards march along the battlements with actual weaponry. Not spears like the villagers before.

"New how, exactly?" she inquired, frowning at Reek. He'd been quiet until now, not that it bothered her, but that the foul creature had seen fit to break the uncomfortable silence with his observation worried her. "Do you come this way often? Is this a 'happened overnight' or 'some time in the last 100 cycles' new? They don't look like locals, from what I've seen." She tried her best to maintain the naive explorer character she had been using but the fatigue of her travels, combined with her water-logged boots, had worn her patience and panache down to bluntness.

She turned back to the fortification, attempting to get a more acurate assessment of the defenders and their armaments. By the Gods, what could such fools be doing in this vile place? She felt a sudden surge of curiousity, her avarice welling up through the malaise that had settled upon her during their trek: whatever they were doing here, it would need to be exceedingly valuable... why else would anyone stand to set-up for an extended period of time in this filth?

Awareness:

She paused, mulling over her options. While Reek was certainly not the most desirable company, she was certain he could guide them back to civilization. On the other hand... this outpost could provide shelter from the incessant rains. Until she had more information from Reek and her own assessment of the inhabitants, however, the thought of blindly walking into range of massed defenders with no knowledge of their operations was foolish at best, suicidal at worst. In the Vortex, one could never be certain what reaction to expect from unknowns; her wits and charm would be of little use if she were filled with holes halfway to the entry.

Invigorated by the new challenge, she addressed Reek a second time. "Are these men familiar to you at all, Reek? Are treasure-seekers or explorers common to the swamps? Would that I'd have known! I'd much rather have struck out with fellows of similar interests."

"I travel this route every few months. Virolous is a place of wealth, resources, and information. We stay in its good graces with... gifts. That way they don't stomp out our little fiefdom." Reek looks at the fort, "They are not locals."

Christina can see why. The guards are not the lanky dregs she saw back at the village. These were bulkier humans with modern clothing. However, the men we not pure. They are diseased. Pores and puss leak out from their uniforms. Skin that has wrapped around gas masks. The warp has touched them.

That and the construction of the fort is not with local materials. Someone hauled it out here.

Then Christina finally sees it. A banner just inside the fort. The mark of Nurgle gracing it.

"Familiar? No. We get outsiders from Virolous but they rarely venture this far." He says with a curious eye, "They never set up permanently like with this fort." Reek says answering the last question.

Christina frowned. Under normal circumstances, such an fortress was a prime target for her and her crew when planet-side; a well-funded expedition in the wilderness was often not prepared for such a concentrated assault. These, however, were not normal circumstances. Lacking a crew or sufficient supplies to make camp and plan an assault, she did not fancy her odds against followers of the Lord of Flies. Besides, it was a miracle as it were that she hadn't picked up something infectious from her encounter with the tribe and the constant presence of Reek. Though she was confident in her ability to slay the guards, her current state made it more likely that Nurgle would "bless" her with some such affliction. The thought of it made her shudder; she had seen such afflictions oft enough in her travels and she did not want to experience them for herself.

"On second thought,"
Christina began quietly, "they don't look to be the friendliest chaps, Reek. Any chance we could go around them? I much rather fancy the accommodations of Virolious over a makeshift outpost."

It pained her to leave the fortress unmolested; her frustrations from the last few days had been without a suitable outlet. With no prisoners conveniently on-hand to torment, no crew to bully and demean, and no vessel to search for other victims, it was only her fatigue that prevented her from inciting bloodshed. But she had not become a Captain by being a fool! A successful raid on a well-supplied fortress with naught but herself and her first-mate was nigh impossible.  If she could assemble a raiding party in Virolious, she may be able to return and find out exactly what the followers of Nurgle were interested in out here in the swamps. Hell, maybe she could enlist the aid of the tribe if she promised them the bodies. But that would have to wait; for now, she would maintain her distance.

Unless, of course, Reek gave her no other option.

Reek thinks over Christina's request, "There is one other way. A long forgotten path no has used in quite sometime. I can not guarantee its safety."

Reek looks back to the fort, "I can say with certainty that there will be no fort blocking our route on that path."

Zigg huffs, "I could take the fort. It would be a good scrappin'."

Christina opened her mouth to chastise Zigg... then bit off her pithy retort.Though the brute was most certainly wrong in his assessment - he would obviously need Christina's aid to take the fortress - he may have been right that they had the ability to handle the fort's occupants. Brute strength, however, would not be the way in which they would conquer their foes.

After a moment, Christina looked to Reek. "On second thought, Reek, I am intrigued by this ramshackle expedition. I wish to know more about their purpose here. It could be beneficial for you and your tribe to know that as well, yes?"

She began to pace, working through the plan that had begun to formulate in her mind. "We can fool some of their sentries into leaving the fortress by inciting their curiosity. A fire from within the cover of the swamp should create enough smoke to provoke a patrol. We can then fall upon that patrol and take one of them prisoner. At best, we get a full account of their purposes. At worst, we thin their numbers."

She paused, turning to Reek again, "Obviously, your help would be appreciated, Reek. Your position in the tribe indicates your competence and their faith in your ability to guide them. In addition to the information that you can return to your tribe, you would be free to take the corpses to feed your tribe and the brains for your leader. I am certain your deity would praise such actions most highly, especially given your current abundance of blessings. Are we of an accord?"

Charm Reek:

"I will see see to the capturing of the patrolmen that I engage personally. You are free to 'scrap' with the remaining men as you see fit, Zigg."

Reek nods his head, "I will gladly help and take those rewards. So, yes, we are of accord."

Zigg couldn't be more happy, "Sounds like a plan, boz."

++++

The fire had been lit (help from Reek to find a material to make it was invaluable) and the group lay in wait.

As Christina predicted a patrol came along. 5 men strong with the point man carrying a shotgun and the rest with las rifles.

[The surprise round belongs the Christina and crew. I think being captain gives Christina dibs on going first here.]

Christina grinned evilly from her ambush position within the undergrowth. Fools, the lot of them; what expedition would build camp so near to an obvious landmark such as their fortress? They were lambs to her slaughter. She took a moment to drink in the satisfaction of outwitting her marks; such success in the face of her recent misfortunes was a welcome change of winds. Their ambush would be deadly efficient... provided, of course, that her underlings followed the plan.

It was an ambush strategem as simple as it was ancient. While Christina preferred to lead from the front, they lacked the numbers for a demoralizing frontal charge. That would not prevent her from striking first, however. The patrol was taking the most direct route from the fortress to the fire; Christina had determined their vector of approach and positioned Zigg and Reek in a perfect flanking position. She would strike like an adder from her cover, drawing the immediate attention of the patrol. Their attention directed towards her, Reek and Zigg would then fall upon them from the rear. Unless the men were hardened soldiers, it was unlikely they would adapt quickly enough to bring any real force to bear. She had made a point of repeating their goal to her minions more than once; they were to identify the leader of the patrol - who was likely the most well-armed - and leave him for last. Christina would lend her swordplay to the butchering of the patrol for, at most, a single member, before moving to subdue their leader. Her deft dismemberment of a patrolman might, she figured, be enough to convince the leader to surrender without a fuss. Zigg and Reek had no orders other than to ensure the leader was left to Christina; she knew the Orc's morale had been low given her refusal to allow him to brawl with the tribesmen and this was the perfect opportunity to let him vent his brutish frustrations.

As the patrol passed her, she felt her adrenaline began to mount. Patience, she must be patient. The more time they had to look into the fire the longer their eyes would take to adjust when they rounded on her. As the rearguard drew close to her position, she took a deep breath and gave the signal. Exploding from her cover, she gave a shrill whistle, smoothly drawing her sword from it's sheath, thumbing the trigger that ignited it's power field, and bringing it down upon the surprised patrolman in one smooth motion.

Charge:

Her charge had gone less splendidly than planned; the undergrowth had confounded her attempt at finesse. That minor inconvenience had been the final straw; with a feral howl she brought the sword down in a blurring arc, slashing viciously into the patrolman's thigh.

Initiative:

The power sword makes solid contact with the soldiers leg. The blade doesn't severe it from his body but it cuts incredibly deep to the point that the leg is barely holding on. Doesn't matter for that soldier though as he immediately goes into shock and collapses to the ground.

If Christina thought she exploded from her cover then Zigg just up showed her. The Ork comes bursting through a bramble sending twigs and branches spraying everywhere.

Zigg:

Zigg comes roaring up to one of the las rifle soldiers and smashes his chain axe into his back. It splits open the flak jacket and rips it way up to his neck.

Reek:

Reek is more subtle as his comes out from behind a tree and slashes one of the soldiers across the back with his chain sword. The soldier stumbles forward in pain but that Nurgle toughness is showing as he stays upright.

The lead soldier with the shotgun reacts the quickest to the ambush. He sights in Christina and pulls the trigger. She can also see he has the best armor having a full carapace chest plate compared to the others flak jackets.

Shotgun Soldier:

The remaining las rifle soldier turns his las rifle around, shoves it into Reek, and fires.

Las Rifle Soldier #3:

Reek:

The las rifle hits Reek straight in the chest but he doesn't looked hurt at all.

[Roll for Initiative!]

Zigg:

Reek:

Soldiers:

[There are two dead soldiers. The remaining two are the shotgun and the last las rifle soldier.]

Seizing the initiative won by their ambush, Christina's fury carried her through her first kill, overrunning her fallen foe and advancing into the face of the patrol's shotgun wielding leader. Her first kill had ignited her lust for swordplay but done nothing to sate her need for flamboyant swordsmanship. This fool would have to serve as a means to remind her compatriots that they ought to show proper obeisance to a captain of her stature!

Disarm:

Fury blazing in her eyes, she brought the hilt of her power sword down upon the barrel of the leader's shotgun. Thumbing the power of the blade, an elegant twirl hooked the raw admantium of the blade under the weapon's now-exposed stock and wrenched it from the nuglite's grip. Deftly catching the falling gun in her off-hand, Christina reactivated the blades power and pointed it at the man.

"You're bested, soldier," she growled menacingly, "submit for parley or perish."

The Pirate Princess rips the shotgun clean from the man's hands sending it tumbling into the swampy undergrowth.

As Christina stares him down she hears Zigg roar and cleave down the remaining soldier.

The leader is all alone now. His fingers twitch...

"Parlay with Slaanesh scum? I'd rather die." He says in a wheezing tone.

The man pulls out a boot knife and charges Christina.

Christina smiled. She was in no mood to grant such requests.
Parry:

Christina cackled as she slapped the boot knife aside. Even with the initial thrill of their confrontation, Christina was now thoroughly bored. A duel with the filthy nuglite scum had a foregone conclusion; she would not waste her time with such trivialities.

Nonetheless, she assumed a duelist's pose. "You have not yet earned the right to die," Christina cooed, "but we shall see." She watched his movements carefully, preparing for the fool to attempt another attack.
Christina's turn:

Tilting her head slightly, she snapped off an order:

"Zigg! Subdue for questioning. Alive, this time."

Zigg stows his chain axe and approaches the leader at speed. In a deft move he sidesteps a knife stab and delivers a punch to the man's gut that sends him doubling over. Zigg then positions himself around to his backside and pins his arms back.

The man struggles but theirs nothing he can do against the might or an Ork.

"He's all yours, boz."

Reek sits back and watches the spectacle unfold, "I suggest we do this quickly. The fort is bound to get curious when their patrol doesn't return."

The subdued leader begins to laugh, "Do your worst. See if you can best the gifts Papa Nurgle has already bestowed upon me."

Christina smiled. It was always far more fun when they resisted. She strode forward, picking up the fallen boot-knife.

"No worries, Reek. We will not remain here long. And if they send a follow-up patrol their base of operations will be even less well-defended. If you're hungry, take this opportunity to feast and stash the remaining bodies for your tribe. Another gift for your services."

She hoped the savage would take her up on the offer; the sight of Reek feasting on the corpses would likely aid in breaking their captive. Such a fate was one that would give pause to even the most hardened individuals.

Inspecting the edge of the blade, she casually addressed the leader: "Strange amount of effort to put into fortifications in this fetid swamp, nurglite. I'd imagine it took quite a cohort to erect it so quickly." She wandered over to the fire and, crouching, began heating the blade over exposed coals. "You said you'd rather die than parlay with me. I believe you'd best consider the following instead: would you rather live than parlay with a Captain of the Ragged Helix?"

She turned to the captive, smiling evilly. "I'm not requesting much, seeing as there is little for you to give me. I simply wish to know why you're here. Speak truthfully and I won't have to remove any of your master's "gifts" before I send you back to them."

She stood barely arm's length from the man now, the knife glowing a faint, ominous red.

"I see no need to waste useful crew to sack your outpost when all I seek is to sate my curiosity. Of course, if you refuse..."
her grin widened, "are you willing to wager your capacity to serve against the certainty that your fellows are all as unwilling to parlay with me? It takes only one, you know. And denying me will only make me all the more curious. And what are the lives of a few deckhands compared to such a fascinating mystery?"

She held the knife near the the side of his head, hoping his diseased flesh could still feel it's threatening heat.

"If you wish to continue serving your masters, I see no reason to stop you. I respect devoted servants... but such devotion is worthless if those servants have nothing else to offer. So I ask you again: what do you seek in these swamps?"

Her face impassive, Christina weighed her options. The scum was clearly unflappable; the subtlety of her deception was completely lost on him. He was no "fun" at all and she loathed him for wasting her time. There was certainly one truth in her interrogation, however: she was now exceedingly curious as to what could be of such vital importance that the man would guard its secrecy with his life.

"So be it," she snarled, and prepared to eviscerate the side of the poor fools skull. Suddenly, however, a flash of rationality pushed to the forefront of her mind. While, normally, she would not hesitate to punish the fool for his impudence, such an act would certainly make it clear to Reek that her initial tale was a lie or, at the very least, only half-truth. While the ambush could be explained away - violence of that sort was commonplace within the Screaming Vortex - the sadistic pleasure she would exhibit in her tortures would give away her true allegiances. She took a deep breath. No, she had more important ends than discovering the intentions of these damned fools.

That did not mean, however, that she could not go for one final ploy. She turned away from her captive and wandered back to the fire. After a moment of silence, she spoke:

"Since you refuse to acquiesce to my perfectly reasonable request, I have no choice. Zigg, break his hands. He shall not get another chance to take up arms against me."

She turned to face the captive again, a smile creeping onto her face. "Inform your superiors that they have 4 hours to reconsider. Maybe they will have more sense than you. If they do not send an emissary to this camp by then, I'll have my ship level your pitiful fortification and take my chances that some evidence of your intent survives in the wreckage. A fitting reward for your petulance in the presence of a Captain. Now GO, before my generosity fails me."

---After the prisoner has been released and clearly has left the area---

Christina sighed. The thrill of the victorious ambush was slipping away, replaced again with smoldering frustration at her predicament. Her efforts had been frustrated at every turn; her guile had thus far bore no fruit and done little to stem the tide of murderous rage that had been slowly been boiling within her. There would be great suffering to pay for these continuous slights against her, she would see to it. But for now... she had to rely only on her wits to ensure that she would again wield the power necessary to met out such monumental punishment.

Remembering that her actions may have roused suspicion in their guide, Christina decided to ward off any such thoughts by continuing the ruse she had begun upon first meeting the tribe. After all, a contingency plan was certainly necessary: she could not afford to be lost half-way to port because her guide decided to have second-thoughts.

"Before you ask, Reek," she began, dryly, "no, I cannot order a bombardment until I return to my crew. Nor would I for such a trivial matter. They," she jerked her head in the general direction of the fort, "don't know that, however. We shall see if the threat of annihilation pushes them to act. I sincerely hope it does; I haven't had a proper meal since I set out on this trek and, unlike yourself, am not keen to feast upon corpses. I agree with your first assessment, however; we cannot safely remain here."

She turned to Zigg, "We ought to move into a position to observe the camp. I want to know how they react to the return of their man. We can determine a course of action at that time. If they refuse to react, we can ignore them and seek the location once we return to my ship. It pains me to leave such a curious mystery unsolved but I care more for the comforts of my vessel than whatever these brutes are pursuing."

Reek's reply to Christina's explanation is a shrug of the shoulders. It seems the death priest understands.

Christina and her companions watch as the leader returns to the fort. He's greeted by a rather large man at the gates. His armor and size denote him as some superior officer.

The conversation is quick and ends with a bolt pistol round going through the returnees head.

Then not as intended the man gathers a large force [15 very well equipped men] out into the swamp.

"Seems they've called your bluff, Captain." Reek says in a whisper, "I think it's time to leave."

"Fort seems rather empty now, boz." Zigg points out.

The amount of guards is now low. Christina counts around 6 men now guarding the wall compared to double that of before.

Perfect, Christina thought, they've fallen for it.

Christina turned to Reek and Zigg. "Alright, it's time to see what they're doing out here. Hopefully," she nodded at Reek, "it is nothing dangerous to your people."

She paused, pondering the fortress defenses. "There are pipes that are easily large enough for me to fit through. When I get inside, I can distract the guards to give you both a safe approach. But I'll need a safe approach myself..."

Her eyes drifted over Zigg's equipment, the final piece clicking into place. "Zigg, your grenades. That should give them something to think about for a moment"

Preliminaries having been dealt with, she quickly outlined the strategy. Zigg would position himself to throw a krak grenade at the wall opposite the pipes on a short fuse. When it detonated, Christina would use that momentary distraction to cross the distance from the cover of the swamp to the pipes. At best, she would be able to get in undetected. At worst, she would be a difficult target that would draw them from their posts immediately. She doubted that any of the guards would last but a moment within reach of her sword, so minimizing their opportunity to bring their firepower to bear was imperative. Once she had breached the walls, Zigg and Reek would watch for any reaction from the guards. If she could, Christina would pilfer provisions and discover the intentions of the outpost, then escape. If not, they would dispose of the guards and Reek would watch for the return of the away team while Christina and Zigg stole provisions and anything of value. Discretion, in this case, was the better part of valor; even she was not so proud as to confront the forces she'd seen without plenty of disposable underlings to put between herself and such danger.

From her cover opposite the pipe system, Christina smiled. It felt good; even without The Endless Pain... here she was, leading a daring raid against a fortified position, taking what others refused to acknowledge was rightfully hers. The buffoons were all too dull to see the greatness of her commands and the intricacies of her machinations and...

She sighed. And it had led to a lesser man seeking to dispose of her. No matter, there would be a reckoning for him.... just as there would be a reckoning for the foolish followers of Nurgle that refused to give her even the most trivial of satiation of her curiosity. She tensed herself for the sprint... Zigg's "diversion" would be certain to occur any moment now.

Stealth:

As the guards turned to inspect the explosion, Christina crossed the fort's no man's land in an instant. Entering into the pipe system, she squinted into the gloom. Her paranoia had returned: that had almost been TOO easy, there must have been some sort of defense mechanism in place for this obvious weakness. She would remain vigilant for such a possibility.

Crawling through the pipe Christina has a hard time noticing... anything. All she can do is push on until she reaches the end. She pushes on and plows through elbow deep muck and something foul. It starts to dawn on Christina which pipe she entered... the main sewer line of the fort.

Willpower (Ewwww...):

The smell of the offal surrounding her finally snuck through her adrenaline fueled focus. While such a disgusting revelation would normally give her pause, it was too late to turn back now. Of course it's the sewer line, she grumbled inwardly, anything less wouldn't do justice to this entire damned trip. For the first time, she was thankful for the planet's constant rain; at least it would wash away the filth when she was done with her infiltration of the fortress.

Christina reaches down deep and pushes on. She is rewarded with a hatch above her. She tests it and it isn't locked or rigged. She opens it... slowly.

She finds herself in some storage room. Boxes and crates are piled high. Most appear to be rations and other survival goods.

Getting up into the room she finds the door which has a hole in it. She looks through seeing she's on the left side of the fort.

In the center of the fort is a tree. An extremely grotesque and mutated tree. It oozes a black liquid and there appears to be a face on the trunk... no... a body that has been enveloped in it or one that is growing out of it...

Chrstina froze. She hadn't known what she was expecting to find inside the fortress... but that thing was most certainly not anything that she could have ever imagined stumbling upon.

She quickly scanned the fortifications to check for guard positions, trying to maintain her cover in the doorway as best she could. Satisfied that her entry had gone unnoticed, she withdrew into the storage room, mind working frantically. There was no time to waste; every second that she delayed was time that the fortress away team would have to realize her ruse and return to their encampment. She also could not stand against all 6 of the men guarding the fortress, and she doubted she could get Reek and Zigg in through the pipe to pilfer the necessary supplies for the rest of the trip. She cursed silently; a raid on this flimsy fortress would have been over in an instant if she only had her crew and sh-

She paused. A smile played across her lips. The secret to any good lie, she mused, was to never back down from it.

She cautiously scanned the courtyard from the darkness of the storeroom. She'd have to move quickly; she'd only have a brief moment to even the odds. As she poised herself for action, she ran through the plan in her head one last time...

It's just a quick dash to the front gate. If it's locked or barred, it should be easy enough for her to break whatever primitive method they employed with a blow from her power sword. From there, a hasty retreat, torching anything flammable with her hand flamer along the way. Minus the tree-thing, of course. Gods knew what it would do if attacked. Once back in cover, she'd try to keep the attention of the guards for as long as possible.

Her brow furrowed.

Then it was touch and go. Hopefully, Zigg was standing by and would take the smoke and gunfire as evidence that she'd done her part. She doubted that she could easily get the doors open even if unlocked, but if the Orc had one thing, it was muscle. More than enough to kick in the doors. Whether Reek would follow him on the other hand... well... she'd cross that bridge when she came to it.

She grinned.

Then burn it to ash behind her.

Christina sneaks her way along the wall and makes it to the front gate without alerting anything of the guards.

She does however feel the watching presence of the tree. Looking back at it see can see a white eye ball from the tree man watching her.

At the gate she sees that it is indeed locked.

All of a sudden a black ooze starts bubbling out of the ground next to her right boot. Then an arm comes shooting out from it going for her leg!

Christina's instincts screamed a warning to her a mere instant before the vile appendage appeared from the ooze, allowing her to narrowly avoid it's grasp. Fighting down a particularly creative string of curses, she did her best to ignore the grotesque limb's flailing as she sized up the door. As expected, the fort's security matched the sophistication of the inhabitants - a slab of wood barred the door from the inside. While strength was certainly not her, well, strength - she had Zigg for that sort of dumb labor - Christina had never intended to strain herself opening the gates.

She drew the ornate plasma pistol from its holster. While she knew little to nothing about the workings of such weapons, simple trial and error and taught her one thing; flipping the secondary safety on the pistol raised the pitch of humming coils. The tingling excitement she felt from removing all safeties led her to only one conclusion: the higher the risk, the higher the reward.

Who needs a battering ram?:

The pistol spat it's lethal load into the beam, striking with a flash and the sizzling sound of plasma eating into the beam barring the door. Christina's eyes widened in excitement; the weapon was glorious. It had barely any recoil to speak of, it's gilded ornamentation gleaming in the light from the delivery of it's payload, the smell of ozone from the plasma bolt's passage filled her nostrils, the satisfying crackle of burning wo...

Her adrenaline suddenly overwhelmed her sensory indulgence. The sound of the weapon's discharge was sure to draw the attention of the guards. She took no time to examine the extent of the damage the blast had caused; it would have to do. She turned and broke into a dead sprint for the cover of the storeroom, taking care to interpose the daemonic tree between herself and those that would be firing upon her. Hopefully, the disgusting followers of Nurgle put some value in the existence of the wretched plant - Gods alone knew why, the thing was hideous - and it would reduce her viability as a target.

Christina blows a huge whole through the wooden bar and the gate itself. You could say it was very unlocked now.

The Plasma Pistol wasn't the most subtle of ways to break through though.

"Intruder!" Rings out from the guards on the walkways above. She can hear them scrambling to get shots on her.

Puddles of black ooze form along her path and arms come shooting out of them to try and trip her.

[Agility -10 test or be tripped and go prone.]

One of the guards above doesn't even try to sight in the sprinting Christina. Instead he draws his power mace and vaults over the wall. The fall would of killed most other men but these were men with the graces of Nurgle. Resistance was the name of the game.

The guard comes crashing onto the ground cutting off Christina's path to the storeroom.

Agility Test:

At top speed, Christina couldn't avoid all of the limbs that lashed out to trip her up. Her stomach lurched as she felt one of the limbs snag her boot and, after a brief moment of being airborne, she skidded to a stop in the muck. For a brief moment, Christina was looking into the greenish-grey clouds that permanently covered the skies.

This really is the worst planet, Christina thought, bitterly, why did I have to end up here, of all places.

Christina rose to her feet, pushing her mud-caked hair out of her face. As she locked eyes with the diseased brute, she was overwhelmed by a feeling of... serenity? Time seemed to slow. Her senses were overwhelmed. She felt every misty raindrop washing against her skin. The scent of damp earth somehow penetrated the smell of offal and disease. The words of her foul offender sounded somehow distant and muffled, obscured by the sound of her blood pounding in her ears. She exhaled sharply; She Who Thirsts was watching. Her foe's insistence on a duel was both a blessing and an opportunity - a chance for Christina to prove her superiority. Finesse against brute force, grace against grotesque; even their weapons of choice highlighted the dichotomy. She would not be beaten by another inferior, barbarous simpleton. She was a captain and if none would show her the respect she deserved then they would suffer the consequences of their foolishness.

She holstered the plasma pistol, drawing her sword and facing the solider. Her lips twitched into an insane grin, baring her teeth.

"Yours?" she purred to her challenger, "Then, by all means, come to me."

She assumed a dueling stance.

"So you can die on your knees"

[Quick overview of your challenger: Much bigger then the soldiers you ambushed, mutations are also much more advanced, and is sporting a full carapace chest plate.]

The guard doesn't respond to Christina. Instead he starts to circle her causally.

"The demonette believes its capable of slogging it through the mud with a true follower of Nurgle. Unfortunately for it though Slaanesh holds no power here. The Lord of Flies does!" The guard raises a pockmarked arm at Christina and a thick swarm of flies fly forth from their holes.

They swarm around the pirate princess causing no damage but her eyesight is obscured [-20 to any reaction rolls and -10 to WS/BS rolls.].

Over the buzz of a thousand flies Christina can still hear something large come crashing through the front gate. Then a explosion ringing out on one of the battlements.

"Come and get some humies!" She can hear Zigg yelling out.

Christina snarled as the swarm of flies moved to envelope her. Her lust for the elegant swordplay of a traditional duel had been prevented before there had even been the opportunity for a single exchange!

Her hand had already begun to move for her hip as the buzzing of the flies filled her ears. She raised her hand flamer and blasted a gout of flame at the mutated hulk. As the burning promethium flared outward, she matched her circling foe's path, diligently moving away from the vile tree that had already done enough to ruin her plans. As she moved, she kept her flamer trained on her foe, squeezing the trigger in a deathgrip, reveling in the warmth and majesty of the flames.

Just as well, she thought to herself, it would do wonders to cover his stench.

Fort Guard:

The stream of burning promethium cuts a gap through the cloud of flies and covers the fort guard. His lack of elegance costs him as he's covered from head to toe in flames. Even in the torrential rains of Mire the flames aren't quenched and the man flails around try to put himself out. There are no screams coming from him only curses.

The ground quakes under her feet. A pool of black ooze seeps up a few feet away from her. She watches as something starts to pull its way out...

Zigg lays down some covering fire on the other guards with his bolt pistol, "I thinkz itz time to boggie, boz!"

[A full move or sprint will get Christina out of the Fort.]

Christina knew a lost cause when she saw one; while she more than ready to cross blades with a few disease-ridden fools, she wanted to avoid tangling with whatever was coalescing in the black muck of that tree.

"Zigg, with me!" she shouted, holstering the spent hand-flamer and bolting for the storage shed. As Zigg entered, she had already gathered up as many easy accessible rations as she could spot. She beckoned the lumbering Ork over and ripped open his pack, stuffing the assorted rations and anything else small and easily pilfered that she could into it. "Not the finest haul, Zigg, but it'll have to do. Now, follow me."

She slipped deftly into the pipes, wrinkling her nose at the familiar scent of the pipe's foul contents. She did her best to push through the sewage, breaking into a dead sprint upon exiting. She finally slowed to halt after she'd made it well into the cover of the treeline, breath coming in ragged gasps. She straightened up and did her best to slow her pounding pulse; it wouldn't do to have her first mate see her flustered, and she was sure the time it took him to catch up with her would do to regain her poise.

She sighed. At least her little away mission from the Endless Pain wouldn't be entirely unexciting... even if it meant she had to make that excitement for herself.

The fort guards tried to to fire on them but their aim in this weather was horrible. Laser fire skipped all around them but none of it touched them.

They pilfer the storeroom and then slink away using the sewer tunnel. Outside the guards don't know where they've gone but a general alarm has been sounded and it radiates out over the swamp. That group that left earlier is definitely on its way back.

However, curiosity turned into a descent raid. Christina had gathered up enough rations to last them about a week if needed. She also found a can of promethium as well or they could use it to make a fire pit that could last a while in this endless rain.

Zigg comes lumbering into their cover with a wide grin, "That waz a good raid."

Reek slithers his way over to them, "We can take this moment to sneak past the fort. Everyone seems to be preoccupied at this time."

Reek was right. The guards on the walkways had gone down into the fort for some reason.

Christina looked at Reek, forcing a smile. Internally, his return had turned her exaltation into icy calculation. That traitorous, filth-encrusted wretch had abandoned his captain during a raid. Under normal circumstances, such lack of loyalty was cause for summary execution. Unfortunately... the present circumstance was far from normal; such an execution would have little purpose: there were no crew to keep in line, no example to be made... even if it would make her feel better. She decided to save the pleasant thoughts of his demise for later when she could concoct a more fitting punishment.

Though Zigg's good mood was unwarranted - that little diversion could hardly be called a "good" raid - she decided to let him savor the brief spurt of violence. No need to quash crew morale.

Simple minds, simple pleasures.

"As fun as all of this has been," she began, "I've begun to tire of this wilderness. Now that we've procured rations, I'm ready to return to my vessel. Lead the way, guide."

As she exaggeratedly gestured for Reek to proceed, her senses, still tingling from the excitement of the raid, caused her to pause...

[For book keeping purposes I'm reposting the 800 XP I already awarded you here.]

Christina's well tuned ears pick up commotion within the fort walls. Seems the guards are trying to calm the tree down.

Her focus snaps back to Reek, "As you wish."

Reek guides them past the fort and back out into the wilderness.

++++

One more day of travel and Christina is finally greeted by some form of civilization and a break in the weather.

She gazes upon a massive piece of deck plating from some Imperial warship. And below in its shadow is Virolous. Compared to the Halls of Dionea, the cities of Q'Sal, or Ghibilline, Virolus was nothing more then a bigger and busier version of the simple village she first visited on Mire.
